Published 3/19/2008 by Paul SF at YFSF
... From the Boston Globe: Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell confirmed to the Globe that the team voted unanimously this morning not to make the scheduled trip to Japan or play its final spring training game against Toronto this afternoon unless the coaches, training staff, and equipment staff were going to be compensated for making the trip to Japan.
''When we voted to go to Japan, that was not a unanimous vote,'' said Lowell, "but we did what our team wanted us to do for Major League Baseball. They promised us the moon and the stars, and ...

... Red Sox Threatening Japan Boycott: At least at this time, and the issue is over the coaching staff getting a $40K stipend that was apparently promised when the game was set up. ... The Red Sox players all took a vote, and are currently boycotting their final spring training game, and possibly their game in Japan (Opening Day game against Oakland) because they are unhappy that MLB (or someone) has failed to follow through on their promises. In particular, coaches and trainers were promised money ($40,000 in some cases) for making the trip, but apparently that offer did not come through. ...

The Red Sox are supporting their coaches, using the massive leverage they have as stars to help out the guys like first base coach Luis Alicea, who doesn't have much leverage in a matter like this. Let's hope someone ponies up the couple hundred thousand for the coaches. Sources: Boston.com Extra Bases ...

The Red Sox are headed to Japan as a compensated whole . Yay! I mean, go fuck yourselves! Wouldn't it have been more courageous and meaningful had the players unanimously voted to forfeit their compensation for the staff that would be accompanying them, rather than unanimously voting to boycott today's game and the team's trip to Japan had the staff gone unpaid for the trip?
