This Is Getting Serious

All the good stuff happens late at night. Steinbrenner's huffy ultimatum he spoke about to the media yesterday reportedly raised the hackles of the Twins' front office, prompting thoughts about filing a complaint alleging tampering and most assuredly pissing off Twins' personnel. Cashman took a much wiser route by refusing to go on record and give his thoughts. The Yankees' offer "deadline" passed at midnight, so presumably that means they are done with negotiating for Santana, right? Just like they said they wouldn't negotiate with A-Rod, or that they wouldn't give Posada ...

... Albaladejo looks like he could bolster the bullpen. This trade comes on the heels of the fading Santana talks, as the Star-Ledger discusses today . That piece quotes Hank as saying, "Other developments are taking place too." Translation: The Yanks aren't putting all their eggs in the Santana basket. Mark Feinsand corroborates that story , saying the Yanks are backing away from the table and looking into what it will take to acquire Haren or Bedard. A report in the Boston Globe says the Twins and Red Sox may be close to ironing ...

... The Twins keep insisting on Ian Kennedy as that 3rd player, but the Yankees steadfastly refuse to include him. "That's not going to happen", said Hank Steinbrenner. "To give up two of the three, there's no chance, not for anybody - unless it's [Sandy] Koufax, and that's not happening.". We'll get more answers today as to whether Santana becomes a Red Sox or if Hank Steinbrenner changes his mind. Source

The Road to Perfection

... second - never mind a third or fourth - chance. And just like a bad Hollywood script, the Pats staged the unlikeliest of comeback wins, even stopping the Ravens on the one after completing a Hail Mary on the last play of the game. So the streak continues. And I don't see a team on the horizon that can break it. The Steelers are frauds, exposed by the Jets. And then a couple of AFC East "rivals" followed by Eli Manning. Bring on the playoffs. Oh, then there's this. Happy Tuesday.

Johan Santana on his way to the Red Sox?

... Haren. Still this isn't a done deal, but like I said, even if it doesn't happen it's no big deal for the Sox. We have our major league squad already basically set for next season (it's only 12/4 people), and we have a plethora of young talent in our farm to develop and use as we wish. We're the World Champs, the Patriots are perfect, and the Celtics are back, why not have Johan join in on the fun? High times indeed. Rumored package to include Jon Lester, Justin Masterson, Jed Lowrie and Coco Crisp. Over at LEN III's blog at StarTribune.com, he reports that the Twins may be in the final stages of a deal that would net four Boston players--two pitchers, a second baseman/shorstop and a centerfielder. Boston.com Ken Rosenthal Over the Monster, SBNation's Boston Red Sox site. Epstein, GM of the year? If this is the deal, I'll agree 100%. Once again, Cmathewson beats me to the punch.
