... One other note on Paps to the pen, I am not totally convinced that the former contestants to be the next Red Sox closer are elated with this move. Donnelly and Pineiro have games finished bonus clauses. Tavares‘ 2008 option could have vested if he stayed in the pen, although he could do better as a starter this winter. Certainly, Donnelly and Pineiro’s agent(s) are not pleased. Here’s hoping Theo has already smoothed things over with their representative(s), but maybe not.

MEANWHILE . . . —Shifting Jonathan Papelbon back to the closer’s role means Joel Piniero—who was supposed to be the new closer until Mike Timlin’s injury compelled moving Papelbon back from the starting rotation—is the proverbial odd man out in the Boston pen. The Boston Herald thinks he could be traded and that Cincinnati might be his best bet, since the Reds were leaning toward Dustin Hermanson as the closer by default out of a sea of journeymen in the pen.
