How, exactly, does the catcher (Jason Varitek) talk to the Japanese hurler (Dice-K) when he goes out for a mound conference? “His English is getting better and better,” Varitek said. “He understands a lot - whether he can speak it back, that’s a different story. But he understands a lot of what’s going on and we have some key phrases and key words in Japanese that I forget really quickly. It’s just simple things. If we start to get really in depth then we need a little help.”

... Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek swears that the team’s ace-in-waiting Daisuke Matsuzaka does indeed possess the fabled mystery of the Orient the gyroball in his pitching arsenal. “It exists. It is a physical phenomenon,” Varitek told WAAF’s Greg Hill yesterday. “But I guess to really understand it, there is a Japanese scientist you have to consult.” Varitek, hitting the airwaves to promote his Celebrity Putt-Putt Tournament next month, says the Sox’ $103 million man is the real deal. “He’s done a tremendous job,” he said.
