Brandon Webb: Underrated
Published 8/20/2007 by RandBall at Randball
... . They know about it in Taiwan, so it must be true. This guy might be the must underrated player in baseball. Indeed, we actually saw the early stages of this streak live on July 25 when we attended the Arizona/Florida game in Phoenix as part of the Great Baseball Road Trip. Some of the guys on the trip hadn’t even heard of Webb; even fewer knew that he won the NL Cy YOung Award last season. The thing is, he’s fairly dominant, but he does his work rather deceptively. He strikes out a lot of batters, but it’s not usually in the mow ‘em down fashion of Mr. Santana’s run yesterday. You just look up and say, “Wow, Webb has 8 strikeouts.” But he is potentially just two starts away from breaking a record we never thought would be broken (Orel Hersheiser’s 59 consecutive scoreless innings in 1988, which topped Don Drysdale’s record despite the disbelie ...
Baseball, really, is all about numbers

... In the coming weeks, we'll move the Rangers' amazing feat to the rear of our minds' baseball compartment. We'll do likewise with Brandon Webb's 42-inning scoreless streak and instead focus on the Diamondbacks' improbable run to a division title. Pennant talk will dominate the airwaves. ...
We'll All Be Fine...
Published 9/10/2007 at STLSportsMag
"Bad results, but if we go about it [the way we did this series], we'll be fine," said La Russa. We're not exactly sure what The Skipper means by "fine". Sure, the Cardinals had the lead in all 3 games this weekend in Arizona. In fact, all three leads were earned after falling behind early. But, the Cardinals walked out of Arizona with 3 loses. If this was June or July, we could probably talk about how averaging 5 runs of offense against one of the National League's top pitching staffs is "a step in the right direction" and how "this team will be fine". But, it's September 10th. The Cards have 22 regular season games left in 2007 - and they're now 3.0 games back of the division-leading Brewers. What a difference 48 hours makes. With Chicago and Milwaukee both losing on Friday night, a Cardinal win would've resulted in a three-way tie for first place in the Central. Alas, a 2-1 lead against 2006 Cy Young winner, ...

Prelude to Wang's outing
Published 5/18/2008 by noreply@blogger.com (Jason) at It is about the money, stupid
Caught this earlier today as part of the previews to Wang's outing later tonite: "He's becoming like Brandon Webb," said Al Leiter, who pitched for both the Mets and Yankees and is now an analyst for the Bombers' YES Network. "He's always had the great sinker like Webb does. But Webb learned a couple of years ago that he needed a second out pitch for those times when he didn't have the good sinker. And he developed a good changeup as well as a pretty good slider. So now he has more than one weapon, and look at how good he's ...

Hmm It Is Boring
Published 7/11/2008 by Nat Baddington (noreply@blogger.com) at Bad Nats
... Snacks 2, Bad Nats 0 People can say that it is because the Snacks use the real good pitch thrower Mesmero Webspin, who has magic to make people bad at offense, but come on. It is the Bad Nats. He sees the Bad Nats walking around holding the bash sticks wrong and saying "How does this work for offense? Do you push a button?" and he says, "Oh, today is time for relaxing and no magic." ...
