Braun edges Colorado’s Tulowitzki for NL Rookie of the Year

Braun edges Colorado’s Tulowitzki for NL Rookie of the Year AL coming up… In the end, the astounding things Ryan Braun did at the plate trumped whatever things he didn’t do in the field. ...Braun was listed first on 17 of 32 ballots, second on 14 and third on one for 128 points, based on the 5-3-1 tabulation system. Tulowitzki was first on 15 ballots and second on the other 17 for 126 points. The two-point differential was the closest in the NL since the current system was adopted in 1980. Braun’s offensive numbers made a compelling case. He batted .324 and led NL rookies ...

Ryan Braun Wins NL Rookie of the Year by 2 Points over Troy Tulowitzki; Dustin Pedroia Wins AL
Published 11/12/2007 at FanIQ Blog
Chicks (and baseball writers) dig the long ball. As I suspected earlier today the voters deemed the home run far sexier than double plays. Ryan Braun's 34 HR propelled him to take home the NL Rookie of the Year Award by a mere 2 points over Troy Tulowitzki. The 2-point margin is the closest margin since the voting when to the current structure in 1980. Hunter Pence finished 3rd and Chris Young 4th. Braun clearly had a fantastic season but I don't know where the Rockies would have been with the bat AND glove of Tulowitzki. In the AL, Dustin Pedroia ran away with the ROY grabbing all but 4 first place votes. Delmon Young finished ...

Quadragenarian of the Year
Published 11/12/2007 by Adam Godson at Bugs & Cranks
People get all excited about the Rookie of the Year award as if it were a modern marvel that a muscular 23 year-old in the prime of their life is good at baseball. It seems like there are good rookies coming up every single year, so what’s the big deal, right? I’d rather focus on the guys with loose skin and old, wrinkly balls. With players routinely playing into their 40s, it’s not as easy as it used to be to pick the Quadregenarian of the Year (QoY). There were some strong seasons put forth by Tom Glavine (300th win), Greg Maddux, and Curt Schilling. Craig Biggio got to 3000 hits and Kenny Lofton still looks like he’s 26. But there are two players, one batter and one pitcher, that ...

Braun Wins ROY
Published 11/12/2007 by grobbins <info@brewcrewball.com> at Brew Crew Ball
It's official, in one of the closest ROY races ever, Braun beat Tulowitzki 128-126. I for one never thought there should have ever been a doubt, as he put together not only one of the best rookie years recently, but in the history of baseball.  Now all we need is the Prince to snag the MVP! You can read more about it here: ...

Kyle Kendrick - 5th Place Rookie of the Year
Published 11/12/2007 by David Cohen <info@thegoodphight.com> at The Good Phight
Kyle Kendrick's 3.87 ERA and 10 wins after his early June callup from AA earned him one second place and four third place votes in the NL Rookie of the Year balloting.  That was good enough for fifth place behind Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki, Hunter Pence, and Chris Young.  That's pretty good company for Kendrick to keep, given that the others were established prospects coming into the year whereas Kendrick really wasn't. An interesting side note from writing this short post: Baseball Reference lists Kendrick's top comp through age 22 as John Denny.  I'd be pretty psyched if there's a Cy Young in Kendrick's future.

Pedroia and Braun win Rookie of the Year Award
Published 11/12/2007 by Andrew Fletcher at Scott Proctor's Arm - A New York Yankees Blog
From Ian Browne: Dustin Pedroia was listed first on 24 of the 28 ballots submitted by two writers in each league city and second on the other four to total 132 points. The Rays' Delmon Young finished second behind Pedroia with 56 points, and the Royals' Brian Bannister tallied 36 to place third in the vote. Pedroia's fellow teammates Daisuke Matsuzaka (12 points) and Hideki Okajima (3) came in fourth and sixth place, respectively. (MLB.com) From Adam McCalvy: Ryan Braun was listed first on 17 of 32 ballots, second on 14 and third on one for 128 points, based on the 5-3-1 tabulation system. Tulowitzki was first on 15 ...

Pence Finishes Third in Writer's ROY

15 votes, all of 'em third-place. I think the idea behind the SBNation awards was the we bloggers would break from the established media in our votes, show by the differences in our balloting that we were, if not necessarily more forward-thinking, at least going by different criteria. That may be so, but with NL Rookie of the Year, we came up with the same answers as our more established and more-credentialed brethren. There was some difference with the AL vote, though.  The writers thought a bit more of Pedroia, the bloggers a bit less of Delmon Young.

Nitpicking the ROY Voting
Published 11/16/2007 by JM Barten <info@beyondtheboxscore.com> at Beyond the Box Score
This week saw the announcement of the Rookie of the Year awards. And I don't have a quarrel with either league's winner. In fact, the writers selected the same two players that I did in my own 2007 wrap piece. Some would gripe about the election of Ryan Braun, whose value with the bat is mitigated by the horror show he put on at third base. I'm not discounting that argument as it clearly has merit. But that's not what this column is about. This column is about the down-ballot choices made by some voters. The vote tally shows that sabermetric writers and analysts still have a lot of work to do. The first egregious example is the less serious one. Kyle ...
