The Rockies have signed Marcus Giles to a minor league deal, and the Mariners have inked former Yankee Miguel Cairo to a deal. Cairo will try to push Jose Lopez for the starting 2nd Base job. Athletics Next Move: Trade Kotsay
Published 1/9/2008 by Eli at MLB Rumors and Latest Mlb Trade Rumors
... According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves have been in contact with the Athletics about a trade involving Mark Kotsay, which would suggest that he is the next player the Athletics plan to move. I do not know how much they can get for him though. He batted just .214 with 1 HR in 56 games and is making eight million dollars in 2008. However, he is a career .282 hitter and has averaged about eleven homeruns in nine years as a starter. Kotsay is a very good defensive center field who could work with Jordan Schafer ...

More center fielders on the horizon?
Published 1/9/2008 by Alex Remington at Chop-n-Change
... David O’Brien reports today that the Braves may not be done shopping for center fielders, as we all guessed. It’s a slow news day kind of thing, as he says: “I’m not saying a deal is imminent or even that the Braves have strong interest in the veteran [Mark] Kotsay, but I’ve talked to people connected with both teams and have yet to have anyone tell me it’s not gonna happen.” He notes that Corey Patterson is another lukewarm possibility. ...
Catfish Stew: Blowing Up The A's, Part 3: Kotsay to Atlanta?
Published 1/10/2008 at Baseball Toaster
David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says he has spoken with Mark Kotsay , who was told by Billy Beane that the A's are working on a deal that would send Kotsay to the Braves for a mid-level prospect. The A's would probably pay at least $5M of the $8M owed to Kotsay this year. If the Braves find Kotsay's MRI acceptable, the deal could be announced Monday. This deal is probably going down now because the Braves other good CF option, free agent Mike Cameron, just signed with the Brewers. It's a good fit for both teams: the Braves need a stopgap centerfielder until Jordan Schafer is ready for the big leagues, and the A's need minor league depth. I feel about this news exactly as I ...
Roundup - Wanted: Center Fielders
Published 1/10/2008 by Dave Rouleau at Baseball Digest Daily
... If the team can settle in the same 7 M$ range he has been earning for the last 3 seasons, that might be acceptable, but in view of his counterparts signings this offseason (Hunter, Jones), he could very well ask for 10 M$ and that's just unacceptable, especially since he will miss close to 15% of the season due to his suspension. The Brewers would clearly benefit from his bat down in the order and his defense that's still average in the majors. 802 miles South, the Atlanta Braves are said to consider either ...

Kotsay To Braves May Be Close

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution just posted his upcoming story in the comments of his blog. Kotsay to Braves?
Published 1/11/2008 by Ryan Armbrust at A Minor Consideration
The rumor mill is a-churnin’, with the latest reports coming from Atlanta indicating that the A’s may be sending oft-injured center-fielder Mark Kotsay to the Braves for a mid-level prospect. Kotsay is due to earn $8 million in 2008, and the A’s will have to eat more than half of that (~$5 million) to get a deal done.
So, who might this mid-level prospect be? Considering what the Braves are getting back in Kotsay, a player that can still be productive with about a .750 OPS — but is an aging vet with injury issues — you’d have to expect that it would be someone in the No. 10-20 range of top prospects in the Braves system. Probably on ...
A's Ready Deal To Send Mark Kotsay To Atlanta
Published 1/12/2008 by Rob at 6-4-2 — an Angels/Dodgers double play blog
Reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and mlb.com say Oakland is finalizing a deal to send outfielder Mark Kotsay to the Braves for a "high- to mid-level prospect" and cash. "The A’s would likely also pay a significant portion of Kotsay’s $8 million salary in 2008." The deal is not expected to be completed until Monday.
And Now, A Few Words About The Other Patterson
Published 1/12/2008 by Cubnut at A Hundred Next Years
At The Cub Reporter I have a post about the latest news regarding Eric Patterson's older brother, Cory, who, with the Braves about to trade for Oakland's Mark Kotsay, is still going to be without a job. The Cubs, meanwhile, gave Ronny Cedeno some playing time in centerfield during his season in the Venezuelan Winter League, in part, Cubs Director of Player Development Oneri Fleita explains, because of how natural Cedeno looked in center field while shagging balls during batting practice last season. I recall seeing footage of Tom Selleck taking batting practice in a Detroit Tigers uniform before a game a few years ago. He, too, looked awfully natural. I'm glad the ...
Looking In On Corey Patterson
Published 1/12/2008 by Cubnut at The Cub Reporter (TCR) | A Chicago Cubs Blog -
Looking In On Corey Patterson Former Cub Corey Patterson has come a long way, and not in the direction any player wants to see his career go. Since the Cubs traded Patterson to Baltimore in January, 2006, he’s had seasons of .276 and .269, with OPS+ numbers of 94 and 80, OBPs of .314 and .304, and a combined 159 strikeouts and 42 walks. On Friday, Baseball Prospectus (subscription) pointed out that as recently as 2000, Baseball America had this to say about Eric Patterson’s older brother: (Corey) Patterson offers the best combination of athleticism and baseball skills of any prospect in the game. He’s the best hitter, the faster runner and the top outfield defender in the ...

Braves Acquire Kotsay
Published 1/12/2008 by Will Schaffer at Chop-n-Change
Buster Olney is reporting that an agreement is in place between Oakland and Atlanta and now Dave O’Brien is saying the same thing. The deal will send Mark Kotsay and just over $5 million in cash to the Braves for reliever Joey Devine. The deal will leave the Braves paying just $2 million for Kotsay this season.
Atlanta has been looking for a one-year stopgap for center field since Andruw Jones left via free agency. Kotsay certainly fits the bill, however I’m not sure about the price Frank Wren paid for the veteran outfielder. A promising reliever like Devine who possibly has a future as a closer seems like too much for a player of Kotsay’s caliber, who has durability ...
Braves Acquire Kotsay
Published 1/14/2008 by Will Schaffer at Chop-n-Change
Update: Kotsay passed his physical and this deal is worse than we thought. According to Mark Bowman, Jamie Richmond and cash considerations will also be included in the deal. Richmond isn’t that great of a prospect and at this point probably profiles as a back-end starter at best, but Wren was probably overpaying with Devine. Now this? I like Kotsay, I think he is going to be a very solid center fielder for us next season, but Frank Wren just pretty much got hosed.
Update: Thought I’d give you guys something fun with this A’s commercial in light of what seems to be almost a done deal.
