Braves prepare to move on without Andruw Jones
The Atlanta Braves say they will not attempt to re-sign outfielder Andruw Jones, who can become a free agent after the World Series. The move was not unexpected as the 30-year-old Jones slumped in the final season of his $75 million contract. [link]

What, No Drumroll?

... October 2nd, 2007 If there s one thing I hate, it s unnecessary suspense. There s plenty enough worry in life without all the artificially-generated anxiety thrown our way. From SportsCenter teasers that won t give away the final score to waiting through three commercial breaks and a dramatic crescendo to hear who s been voted off the island, or out of the house, or into the tank with the snakes and tarantulas. (I m not sure that last show actually exists. It may have just been a dream I had about Joe Rogan finally having the tables turned on him. A beautiful, beautiful dream.) The point is, so-called suspense is often nonsense. I say, when a conclusion is forgone, then get it over with already and move on. Leave the nailbiting to the gamblers and the OCD types. Apparently, Braves GM John Schuerholz agrees with me. This afternoon, with the unis and jock straps barely dry from the season s last game, Schuerholz informed Andr ...

New Home for Jones

... October 02, 2007 New Home for Jones The Braves said goodbye to Andruw Jones today , paving the way for him to become a free agent this winter: Indeed, the move was not unexpected as the 30-year-old Jones batted only .222 in the final season of his $75 million contract. He's eligible to file for free agency after the World Series. "It just doesn't work for us," Schuerholz said. "It doesn't demean or diminish everything he's done." The Braves plan to use the money they'll save on Jones to bolster their starting rotation -- a glaring weakness beyond John Smoltz and Tim Hudson -- and to sign first baseman Mark Teixeira, who made $9 million this year and is eligible for arbitration. I wonder how much Jones will make next year. There is some competition in centerfield as Torii Hunter also hits the free agent market along with Mike Cameron and Aaron Rowand. That's a pretty good supply of centerfielders, which might keep the ...

... BREAK UP THE JONES BOYS?—Looks as though the Atlanta Braves, via general manager John Schuerholz, have told Andruw Jones to hit the road, Jack—Schuerholz told Jones at Turner Field first, then the press, that the Braves can’t afford to keep the Gold Glover who had a dubious offencive 2007 but still wants a raise above the $13.5 million he made (some would hesitate to say “earned”) this season. ...

... I agree, that is bizarre. Apparently the Braves believed, and John Schuerholz stated, that the figure Boras was asking for was beyond approachable for Atlanta. I still have a problem with this decision, since it furthers the chances of us losing out on draft pick compensation. Knowing that the Braves won't offer AJ arbitration, teams that wish to try and sign him can simply wait until after the arbitration deadline. They won't have to worry whether or not the Braves were going to slap arbitration on him. Now, they could offer him arbitration if they felt confident another team had a deal in place and were just waiting for the deadline to pass, but then why not just keep it a secret in the first place. ...

Boom, Bust, or Bobby Bonilla: Andruw Jones

... The 26 HR's and 94 RBI aren't the problem. The alarming numbers are the .222 average, the .311 OBP, and the .413 slugging percentage are huge dips from where Jones is accustomed to. It wasn't a sure thing that Jones was going to re-sign with the Braves anyway, but those numbers basically sealed Jones' fate as far as the Braves were concerned. Throw in the whispers that Jones just may be the most ...
