Published 8/28/2008 by TD at Rain Delay
According to Mark Bowman, Braves beat writer for MLB.com the Braves have gone out and signed veteran pitcher Elmer Dessens.
The Braves have agreed to terms with Elmer Dessens on a Major League contract for the remainder of the 2008 season. The 37-year-old right-hander, who spent this year pitching in Mexico, is expected to join the Braves later this week.
And it’s also noted he will be in the rotation for the rest of the season, and I’m betting if he performs decent he’ll get a invite to spring training. Boy, what a year it’s been huh?

According to Tim Dierkes over at MLB Trade Rumors (who cited Mark Bowman of MLB.com) the Braves have signed 37-year-old, Mexican League pitcher Elmer Dessens.
Dessens was slowed by an injury this Spring and eventually cut by the Pirates, then wasn’t good enough, upon become healthy, to pitch in the majors. So, in true “Jake Taylor” form (What movie guys???), Dessens went to Mexico to pitch… the Triple-A Mexican League.
It’s true, Dessens is 10-2 in the Mexican League, but he has a 4.03 ERA in 19 starts. Can anyone guess what the equivalant MLB ERA will be? This is gonna get ugly?

Apparently, the Braves front office has been listening to our complaints, and help is on the way: Elmer Dessens! He’s old and sucks, so I’m not really gonna break him down. He’s played all year in the Mexican League, where he’s put up an ERA around 4.00. It’s a high-offense environment, so that’s not terrible, but again, he’s a 37-year old journeyman whose last year was atrocious and who was, in his prime, basically league-average.
But it’s part of a curious, interesting strategy, one that I don’t completely disagree with: as DOB reports from talking to Wren,
any of the Braves’ top young prospects in September, ...
