The bombshell allegations are contained in a court document filed Tuesday by Donaghy's lawyer. It describes the “inner workings" of the NBA in which top league executives used referees to manipulate games. Donaghy, who pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to charges of betting on games he officiated, told FBI agents “league officials would tell referees that they should withhold calling...

You're a disgraced former official with a serious axe to grind against the league, and you're trying to do some damage.  So you pick one of the most questionably-officiated games of the decade and throw out your conspiracy accusation--during the Finals for maximum impact, of course. You are a complete douchebag.

I was a Miami Heat fan when they played the Dallas Mavericks on 2005, but it was obvious then that the referees threw the game .Dwayne Wade went to the foul line 5 times in the last 20 seconds. It was obvious to everyone watching. Mark Cuban was so furious that, 6 months later he was trying to sell the team. Cuban knew that the NBA was dirty. David Stern somehow talk him out of it. NBA players have long accused the referees of being cheating.

This was long before I had ever heard of Tim Donaghy. Rasheed Wallace is not as crazy as the refereees have made him out to be. He's been made a target. He walked of off the court early in a play off game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He and other Pistons told G.M. Joe Dumars, that the referees threw the series.I'm a Michael Jordan fan, but he got away with pure hell.

This another case of Jose Canseco again. Everybody thought it ws just sour grapes. Las Vegas plays a bigger part in professional sports than most of us purist really want to admit.

Keith, I tend to agree. As much as I think Donaghy is a loser and a cheat, something about his words rings true. For instance, look even at the disparity in free throw shooting and the types of fouls called between Games 2 and 3 in this year's Finals. It's to everyone's advantage for this series to go 7.

His words ring true because he referenced a game in which the bad calls happened to go against the small-market team that was up 3-2.  Note that he had to go back 6 years to find a plausible example.

From the league's perspective: is 1 or 2 more games in a 7-game series worth risking the integrity of the game?  Come on!

If the NBA was fixing games, why have they made us suffer through four goddam Spurs championships.  That drove more fans away than any betting or game-fixing scandal ever could.

Simple. Because in the long run, they can point to it and say "see, if we were fixing it, would the Spurs have won it so many times?" It was all a part of their plan...

Actually, I really don't know if I believe that. But it would kinda make sense... if you can assume that the guys heading the NBA are smart enough to look that far ahead and forsee issues popping up.

I am not sure that the NBA is fixing games like the mob would do, what I believe is that the NBA is "enhancing" the series.

Would I be surprised to find out that there was something shady in playoff series? No.

The NBA's Big Fix
Stet Sports Blog — ... Prostitutes can be raped, and thieves can give to charity. So why can't a gambler tell the truth about the NBA's propensity to fix games? There is no shock in this news, as many people thought the 2008 NBA Finals were set up to reacquaint America with the sport's most famous rivalry. It doesn't hurt that the league MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and their top-seeded clubs are the finalists for the title, because it staves off the conspiracy theorists and makes skinning and grinning for the camera that much easier. ...

And One — ... So now Tim Donaghy says he was only following orders . Ex-NBA referee Tim Donaghy told the feds two officials fixed the outcome of a playoff series - and that refs were told not to eject star players from games for fear of hurting ticket sales.
