Twins Trade Gomez for Hardy
Nick's Twins Blog —
Bill Smith made his first big offseason splash today, sending Carlos Gomez to the Brewers in return for shortstop J.J. Hardy, who was a suggested trade acquisition in my offseason blueprint. The deal swaps two players who both saw their value drop with rough seasons in 2009, though surely Hardy has proven more at the major-league level. My initial reaction is that I'm very sorry to see Gomez go, as he was a personal favorite, and I'm very concerned about the team's outfield defense over the next few seasons. But perhaps the writing was on the wall during a month of September in which the Twins were making a fierce charge and Gomez was seeing virtually no playing ...

... Also, it's hard not to notice the Crew will have him for his years of 24-27...he is likely to keep getting better until he reaches free agency. Adams sums up that Doug was unable to get a SP he liked enough for JJ, so he plugged another need. This may well make it more likely that Hart is dealt to add an arm, and another SP will be added in free agency. ...

The best general managers, 2009
Sports stories from Newsday —
The best general managers, 2009 1:12 AM By Ken Davidoff YANKEE STADIUM, NY: Tuesday, Oct. Greetings from Chicago! Last year, as you can read here , I shared a flight to the general managers' meetings with Brian Cashman (among 100 or so other people). This year? The Notre Dame women's soccer team . Now I see why they were in such a good mood - and also why they were carrying "Big East champions" paraperhnalia. Congratulations, Fighting Irish! But let's not get sidetracked here; whereas last year's Cashman sighting and flight movie selections proved sort of cosmic, I can't think of any inferences to make from this year's random encounter. The GMs' meetings are ...
Welcome back to Chicago, Mike Cameron!

Mike Cameron (Cubbie Nation/file)
No, it hasn't come to fruition yet, but I suspect that it's a phrase that we should all start practicing.
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired center fielder Carlos Gomez in a swap with the Twins for J.J. Hardy, relegating Mike Cameron, at least temporarily, to the ranks of the unemployed.
Can't blame General Manager Doug Melvin. As a cash-constrained team, especially one desperate for pitching, they simply couldn't afford the luxury of Mike Cameron. Between his salary and Hardy's, they look to free up a very good chunk of change, enabling them to dip into the free agent market for a pitcher or two. ...
