Brewers Release Claudio Vargas
Published 3/25/2008 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... According to Tom Haudricourt, the Brewers have released 29 year-old starter Claudio Vargas. It's a very surprising move. He's already cleared waivers; Haudricourt isn't sure how much the Brewers will save of his $3.6MM salary. Just like that, the Brewers' starting pitching surplus is pretty much gone.
Even if the ERAs haven't been there, you have to credit Vargas for good peripheral stats (6.43 K/9, 3.48 BB/9 for his career). To me he's an affordable #4 starter with the chance to post 175 innings of 4.50 ball. All ...

BREAKING NEWS: Brewers release Claudio Vargas

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com’s story
JSOnline.com’s Tom Haudricourt’s take on it
Wow…neither McCalvy, Haudricourt, Vargas, or myself saw that coming. Vargas had a killer spring, and is under contract for $3.6 million or so. But with Bush needing to clear waivers (and likely to be claimed, as he is somewhat more affordable at $2.5 million), and the desire to go with all three of their young guns this season (Gallardo, Parra, and Villanueva), Vargas became the odd man out.
Haudricourt reported that Yost will reveal his initial ...
Goodbye Vargas

[editor's note, by KLSnow]I promoted this to the front page because it's both huge news and largely unexpected. KL http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/25/brewers-release-vargas.aspx Surprising, but good news. I figured after Capuano's injury they'd be a little more gun shy about letting a starter go. Now Villanueva and Parra will both make the team and we'll be treated to fewer excruciating 3.5 hour games.
Brewers set rotation
Published 3/25/2008 by Eric Stashin at Rotoprofessor
According to Tim Haudicourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (click here ), the Milwaukee Brewers have released Claudio Vargas. The move leaves the Brewers rotation as Ben Sheets, Jeff Suppan, Dave Bush, Manny Parra (pictured above) and Carlos Villanueva to open the season. Yovanni Gallardo will take a spot as soon as he returns from the DL. This is a very surprising move, especially given how Vargas had performed this spring (3-1, 3.86 ERA). He wil find work somewhere, though it may not be in a starting rotation right away. We have been talking about Parra for the past ...
Mets Eyeing Claudio Vargas
Published 3/26/2008 by McFleece at MLB Fleece Factor
... Vargas, 29, was somewhat surprisingly released by the Brewers (considering the injury to Capuano) earlier this week in what has to be considered a salary dump and has cleared waivers. The versatile right-hander threw 134 innings last year going 11-6 despite a terrible 5.09 ERA. He has a lifetime ERA of 4.95 and an ERA+ of 92 (below average). He’s basically a mediocre pitcher but can pitch in any role and eat up innings. ...

... this intro post at Over the Monster by our esteemed tech guru Trei Bruntrett. A facsimile of that post will appear in this space when the cutover is made, so you can kill some time and be one step ahead of the game by going there and reading it now. Go on, I'll wait. Ok, while they're off reading, let's look at a few interesting names that were recently released by their former teams. Well, the players were released, not the names, but you catch my drift. Claudio Vargas, who was released by the Brewers on Tuesday to save the team some $2.7 million. ...
