Broncos beef up defense, sign McCree and Manuel : Broncos : The Rocky Mountain News
Scratch safety off the Denver Broncos’ wish list. The team dipped into the free-agent pool twice Saturday, signing a pair of veteran players, Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel. The moves at worst are a hedge against a weak draft crop at the position and adds depth to a shallow defensive spot on the roster. Denver Gets Their Man: Marlon McCree
BroncoTalk — ... In the article they cite that McCree will directly challenge Lynch for his position. This doesn’t exactly make sense that they would put up big free agent money to land McCree (arguably the best safety available on the market) after giving a new contract to Lynch for both to battle it out in camp. I would be willing to bet Slowik has a scheme in mind to get both talents on the field at the same time even though they are both designated as Strong Safeties by default. Full article with some extra news on Manuel as well

BRONCOS ADD SAFETIES
ProFootballTalk.com — With few solid safeties available in the draft and veteran John Lynch much closer to the end of his career than the beginning, the Broncos snagged a couple of last-line-of-defense free agents on Saturday. Joining the team are former Chargers safety Marlon McCree and former Panthers safety Marquand Manuel (or is it Manuel Marquand?). Per the Rocky Mountain News , Manuel’s package has a base value of $4.5 million over three years, with $500,000 guaranteed.  Up to $1.5 million can be earned in incentives.

Marion McCree also signed at SAF
The Mile High Report — Marion McCree has also been signed at SAF.  Hat Tip to nycbroncosfan for the scoop.  Link is below. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/mar/08/broncos-beef-defense-sign-mccree-and-marquand/ I don't have much to add.  McCree has some fans at MHR, and this should make some folks happy.  I like the idea that Denver is going for some depth at the SAF position, and perhaps abandoning the CB/SAF hybrid approach.   It looks like SAF and LB positions are settled.  Now the draft can focus on WR, DT, and OL depth.  I'm feeling good about ...
