PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates, who have emphasized a need to find talent via every available outlet, have gone where no team has gone before. On Monday, the Pirates signed two young Indian pitchers, 20-year-old right-hander Dinesh Patel and 19-year-old southpaw Rinku Singh, as non-drafted free ...

Bucs Ink Indians Who’ve Never Been To Cleveland
SPORTSbyBROOKS — The wait is finally over. Our favorite Indian pitching hopefuls, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel — who we have followed throughout their journey to America — have been signed to a minor league contract by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Makes sense. Nothing else works for the Bucs, so why not trot out a couple of guys who didn’t know what Denny’s was until two weeks ago? Rinku and Dinesh, the Indian pitchers (The guy in the middle is probably getting signed by the Mariners) But not so fast. The news of the signings came from YAHOO! JAPAN, and was written in, you know, Japanese . So it’s not entirely clear if they have actually signed on the dotted lines. The Pirates have not announced ...

A Passage To India?
Bugs & Cranks — Talk about change. When Dave Littlefield and Kevin McClatchy ran the Pirates, I’m not sure there were scouts assigned to cover Indiana.  With Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington running the show now, there’s word today that the Pirates have signed two pitchers from India to minor league contracts. Twenty year-old right hander Dinesh Patel and and 19 year old-lefthander Rinku Singh will both participate in the team’s minor league spring training next year. As amazing as that occurrence is in and of itself, it actually gets better from there. It seems that the two pitchers came to the Pirates attention by winning an Indian reality show designed by Barry Bonds’ PR ...

More on Patel and Singh
Where Have You Gone, Andy Van Slyke? — First things first, Patel and Singh officially signed. I thought it was important to note that news from a site that didn't need a babel fish to figure out what was going on. Secondly, I mentioned their blog second-hand in my earlier post and I know that a lot of you checked it out through the Walkoff Walk post I quoted, but if you haven't read it yet you really have to do it. There are a million things I could quote, but to give you an idea of what these guys have been thrust into, read this post: Tonight we were celebrating the Halloween Holiday here in America. we are not sure what the holiday comes from, but kids dress up in all kinds of crazy outfits and ...

Rebuilding the International Way
The Outsiders Look at the Insides of Baseball — The Hot Stove League has hit a lull, the big name free agents are still jockeying for the best possible offer, and many of the trade rumors have cooled for now. The Winter Meetings, being held in Las Vegas beginning December 8th, is where most of that action will occur. ...

Baseball Blues
Blue Collar Baseball — Sorry in advance for the surly tone... I'm battling a case of the baseball blues. This time of year is nothing short of brutal. Even MLB talk radio on XM isn't doing much for me right now - yesterday morning, the hosts talked about Plaxico Burress. I guess they're as starved for baseball news as I am. The winter meetings are going on next week in Las Vegas, so maybe we'll get some news out of that - but probably nothing from my teams. Here are a few choice nuggets of info: It looks like Dusty Baker is still trying to bring no-good/washed-up former Cubs players to Cincinnati. This time it's Kerry Wood. Absolutely brutal. Chris Sabo's Googles expresses ...

Another International Signing For The Pirates
Bucs Trade Winds — Neal Huntington has made yet another splash into the international market signing Taiwanese LHP Chi-Hung Cheng to a one year contract.  He will be reporting to A ball this coming season.  While this isn't a huge signing, it is making a name for the Pirates in the Taiwanese market, a previously untapped region for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cheng is a former Blue Jays minor leaguer.  Here is a link to his Baseball Cube stats. Huntington is still in the process of hiring scouts in Europe, Asia, Australia, Taiwan, Korea and several other countries. This signing follows the recent signings of 3 players assigned to the Venezuelan Summer League Pirates affiliate ...
