allonthefield +1So why are you not allowed to bunt in an exhibition? Is that some sort of "unwritten" unwritten rule?-
Evil Empire I think the rule is, Wagner doesn't have to play defense in exhibition games.

... DWright and Moises Alou tried to carry this team through September. I wouldn't worry about either of them come crunch time. Alou is just a pro, we all know that. Keeping him healthy, well that's another story. Jose is going through growing pains, but I get the idea last season taught him a lesson he won't soon forget. Duaner Sanchez is back and is probably another one who learned a valuable lesson last year. Billy Wagner is already being himself, almost starting a beanball war with the U of M baseball team (calm down Billy, save it for when it ...

... this fan wants to see how he holds up in '08 before talking extension. Ya gotta believe Mets in the news * Hope Aaron Heilman's in good voice. The reliever's gotta sing the Michigan fight song after giving up a run in an exhibition against the college's baseball team. Don't know what I like less, the fact that Heilman's gotta make like an "American Idol" contestant or the fact that he coughed up a run against a bunch of kids. * And what was with Billy Wagner getting all bent out of shape after some college kid tried to bunt on him? Jeez, Billy, take a chill ...

Billy Wagner Resists Urge To Plunk College Player

NEWSDAY uncovers a fantastic quote from Billy Wagner regarding the Mets’4-4 tie with the Michigan Wolverines. Apparently the closer was thisclose to chuckin’ one high and hard at UM batter Kevin Cislo . Cislo was attempting to bunt with one out and a runner at second base, and that was enough for Wagner to go into a tizzy. Later he told reporters “If he got that bunt down, I would have drilled the next guy […] Play to win against Villanova.” The Wolverines had just come off a three-game sweep of Villanova, so no, they can’t beat them again. How can anyone fault college ...
Billy Wagner Has No Bones About Beaning a College Kid

... Grapefruit League exhibition against a college team or no, Billy Wagner doesn't mind uncorking a beanball if someone dares cross him. With the Mets facing Michigan today, Wolverines centerfielder Kevin Cislo tried to drop a bunt on a Wagner pitch, but it went foul. How'd the aging closer react? Very, very calmly of course. ...

... Billy Wagner - never one to shy away from expressing his opinion, Wagner has mostly backed up his open persona as solid back end to a recently historically weak part of the Mets roster. He's been having a little more trouble staying fresh all the way to September for the last two years, and he's not going to blow you away with a 100+ mph heater anymore. What he can provide, though, is a solid fastball change-up combo, a good mentoring influence to the younger relievers, and a beanball for Wolverine, Kevin Cislo . Mariano Rivera - turns out the soon-to-be 38 year old *IS* ...

That’s real classy of a professional athlete getting all up in arms about a college kid trying to bunt off him. If Wagner couldn’t handle this situation it’s no wonder he’s blown so many games the last few years and he fits in with that clubhouse that produced one of the most epic collapses in history.
