My first memories of the World Series, from 1973 and 1974, are vivid. I remember watching Willie Mays stare into the sun as he tried unsuccessfully to track a fly ball, then seeing him plead without success after a Mets teammate -- Bud Harrelson , I think -- was thrown out at the plate. A year ...

Enough
ShysterBall — I was content to roll my eyes as every second rate hack from every second rate newspaper auto-piloted his way through his "we must fix the World Series" column last week, but now that a serious, and respected guy like Buster Olney is peddling this garbage [Insider only], something must be said. First, let's hear it from Buster, who after recalling watching World Series games played in the daytime some 35 years ago, offers the following: Naturally, the deeper you play into the fall, the more likely it is that you'll have the kind of farce that we saw in Philadelphia, where Mother Nature flexed her muscles and forced ballplayers ...

Final thoughts on the World Series
It's About The Money - A New York Yankees Blog — As Gammons, Olney, Whitey Herzog and countless others have postulated: moving to a neutral site for the World Series is a terrible idea. Except these guys, all baseball lifers/insiders, at least have the best interests of the game in mind, even if I completely disagree with their stance. And if you thought I was against it, you should have a gander over at Shysterball, who was clearly wearing his three-sizes-too-small angry pants when he ranted about Olney's blog entry. But at least they are trying to come up with ideas to fix the game they/we love. Then there's Gregg Doyel at CBSportsline.com. Gregg ...

The Griddle: Please make them stop!
Baseball Toaster — In his blog yesterday (which you have to pay extra for), Buster Olney of ESPN.com had what had to be the lamest reasons for a neutral site World Series. I will only excerpt small parts since this is special value-added content! Along the way, MLB could arrange for Hall of Famers to attend daily fan-fest functions, panels and autograph-signing sessions and seminars. The general managers could hold their annual meetings during that week, and the GMs could break away from their hotel to hold town-hall-style talks with fans about their teams as their managers are in town. The baseball writers could announce, day by day, the winners of the major awards -- rookies ...

Today at THT
The Hardball Times — We now have ourselves a Super Bowl match up, and because we've all known where the game is going to be played for years and because weather is not an issue, we now have two whole weeks worth of media days, Playboy parties, VIP gatherings, television specials, marketing tie-ins, and countless other media, P.R., and corporate-driven baloney before any actual football is played. On this august occasion, I would ask Buster Olney, ...
