... Derrick Goold has the low down on some let-gos. These are all good signs for the team. Matt Scherer’s addition to the 40-man roster was a mistake from the start leaving Luis Perdomo exposed. We saw plenty of Joe Thurston last year and, apparently, the team did too. The Cardinals have better upside plays (particularly in the pen) rather than stick with high floor low ceiling guys like this pair. The release of Brad Thompson strikes me as the most surprising but again, a good sign that the team realizes his function as “long reliever” wasn’t worth more ...

Cardinals release Brad Thompson, make roster trims In an attempt to cleanup their 40-man roster for the offseason, the St. Louis Cardinals made a series of moves this morning that included releasing reliever Brad Thompson. The roster moves started last night with Jarrett Hoffpauir being picked up off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Cardinals also moved infielder Joe Thurston and reliever Matt Scherer to the Triple-A Memphis roster Thompson seems sorta useful with a 4.84 ERA last year and a 4.34 career ERA.
