The Cardinals have no one in the farm system that are ready to a.) put together an average season of major league ball and b.) log a respectable number of innings throughout the course of a season. It's not valid to argue those facts: Blake Hawksworth, the closest prospect to being major league ready, pitched a career-high 129.2 innings last year with a 5.27 ERA (with equally bad peripherals), Mike Parisi logged 165.0 innings but had a FIP of 5.17, and Mike Smith is a career AAAA player. There simply isn't much available to hold a roster spot, and that's a product of the organization's inability to advance prospects in the past. Hopefully, we've solved that problem now. ...
