The Morning Tailgate
STLSportsMag —
Happy Friday all. Rather than waste time on some meaningless chatter, let's just get straight on into the links, shall we: The Cardinals sign Matt Clement off the injury heap. Cheap money with incentives and an option for a 34-year old who hasn't really pitched since the first half of '06. Let's just hope he doesn't come with that chin hair. [ STL Today ] In case you're interested in a little more in depth review of Clement's stats [ ...
Deal more risky for Cards if Clement performs well
Cardinal Nation Globe —
Simply put, I like the Matt Clement deal. His one-year incentive-laden contract is not much of a risk. Clement is guaranteed $1.5 million in base pay this year and could possibility earn $5.25 million more in performance bonuses if he pitches 200 innings. As funny as it may sound, the deal is probably more risky for the Cardinals' pocket books if Clement performs well: The Cardinals have an $8.75 million option for 2009 with a $250,000 buyout. The option would increase to $9 million and the buyout $500,000 if Clement reaches 160 innings this season; $9.5 ...
My Darling Clement-ine
C70 At The Bat —
(Surely I won’t be the only one to use that one.) As you know, the Cardinals signed Matt Clement yesterday to fill up the rotation. More about the contract is available now , so let’s take a look at those terms: the Cardinals acquired Clement for $1.5 million in base pay and $5.25 million in appearance incentives. The deal also includes a club option for $8.75 million next season. A series of escalators based on innings pitched could jack up the option’s value to $10 million if the 33-year-old righthander works 200 innings. ...
Legitimate Rotation?
Rockin' the Red —
STLToday has a new article up about Matt Clement and the Cardinals legitimatized rotation, including this quote from Mozeliak: "We definitely feel we're better than where we were yesterday," Mozeliak said. "When you look at Pineiro and Clement with a more seasoned Wainwright and Looper, it's coming together as a solid, legitimate rotation. Potentially adding Carpenter after the All-Star break gives it even a better look."But is it really time to call the rotation legitimate? Some synonyms for legitimate we can insert here are genuine, valid, logical, ...
Miles from nowhere
Cardinals Diaspora —
Did anyone catch this tucked into the bottom of the PD’s Matt Clement story today?
Not satisfied with their infield depth, the club also has entertained re-signing infielder Aaron Miles, whom it non-tendered last month.
Not satisfied with their infield depth! Nobody’s satisfied with the Cardinals infield, none of it, but is signing another warm body with a glove really the answer, especially one like Miles who would be guaranteed a roster spot on a La Russa-led club really the way to add infield depth?

Free agent pool narrowing
Mets Fever —
... Matt Cerrone at Metsblog made compelling arguments for the team to acquire Josh Towers and Aaron Miles. Towers would be a nice fit because he'd only have required a one year contract and could compete for the fifth rotation spot or the long man role. Miles could have been that last man on the bench and serve as a super-sub playing most any position. Towers has signed with the Rockies (source MLB.com) and the Cards are looking to bring back Miles (source St. Louis Dispatch)..... ...
Legitimately Mediocre
Viva El Birdos —
After the Matt Clement signing, Mozeliak declared that the starting rotation was "legitimate." That's a curious term to use considering two of the rotation's projected starting 5 are coming off surgeries and the 2 have thrown a combined 26 innings since the 2006 All-Star break! Another member of the rotation is coming off season-ending surgery and may not pitch at all in '08. Certainly the team can hardly count on Carp's contributions in '08 and the two leading contenders to fill in when a member of the rotation goes down combined for a 5.32 ERA in '07. ...
