tdaloisio +2Does anyone else find this trade odd?-
matt I think the White Sox got the better end of the deal, which makes me think the Angels might be stockpiling pitching to make another trade.
Either way, it's now or never for Brandon Wood.

The Griddle: Angels form quorum for Kennedy High Alumni Association meetings
Published 11/19/2007 at Baseball Toaster
The Los Angeles Angels acquired pitcher Jon Garland from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for shortstop Orlando Cabrera. Garland, as I tell a lot of people , attended John F. Kennedy High in Granada Hills, CA , which is also where his new teammate Garret Anderson played high school ball. Anderson is seven years older than Garland. And this Kennedy High graduate (namely me) is seven years older than Anderson. And my oldest brother is close to seven years older than me and he went to Kennedy High also. However, there are no Kennedy High grads seven years older ...

Adios Jon, hello Orlando
Published 11/19/2007 by R.J. at Snobs vs. Slobs
Ken Williams struck his first big note of the offseason with the trade of 28-year-old starting pitcher Jon Garland for shortstop Orlando Cabrera and cash considerations . After taking a quick-and-dirty look at the stats, I’m not as disappointed in this trade as I thought I would be. VORP -wise, it’s not as big a problem as I expected, as Garland’s 2007 VORP was 26.6 against Cabrera’s 31.7. Cabrera will make $9M next year, Garland will get $12M. The problem is in the future. Garland, for all his faults, Of course, this isn’t just a move for 2008, but for the future. ...

News Roundup: Angels Trade for Jon Garland
Published 11/19/2007 by Charlie <info@buccosdugout.com> at Bucs Dugout: Front Page Posts
-P- The Angels have traded shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the White Sox for starter Jon Garland. My first reaction was that this was a steal for the Angels, but after looking into it further, I'm not sure. This deal presumably opens a spot for Brandon Wood to start at shorstop, which is great for Los Angeles, but Garland is owed $12 million in 2008. While he reliably eats innings, his strikeout rate shrunk to 4.23 batters per nine last year. His ERA was also 4.23, and one wonders if he'll be able to keep that up next year, particularly without Orlando ...
Garland and Cabrera: An Equal Swap
Published 11/19/2007 by JC at Sabernomics
Today, the Angels agreed to swap shortstop Orlando Cabrera for White Sox starting pitcher Jon Garland. The deal also sends some cash to Chicago. Here is my brief assessment.
When I checked the numbers, I was surprised to see how similar the two players are. Both have one year left on their current deals. Cabrera is owed $10 million and Garland is owed $12 million. Over the past three years, both players averaged close to $12 million in value, though Cabrera’s play was a bit more volatile. Thus, both players have contracts that come close to ...

... Also, the Angels traded Orlando Cabrera for Jon Garland today. I'm not really sure that I understand the move considering that the Angels had pretty much Vlad and Cabrera perform consistently throughout 2007 and that was it. They had other guys perform, but they also had injury issues or other inconsistencies. I am in the camp that thinks that this means that Ervin Santana is going to be dealt for Tejada or possibly a Miguel Cabrera deal is coming for the Halos. I guess it's conceivable that the Angels are just stacking up on starting pitching with the ...
Lowell and Behold

... I have to admit, I’ve been in a baseball bunker ever since the season ended (notice the lack of posts) and the Lowell situation had a lot to do with it. I was so freaking worried this guy would end up on the Yankees and I just couldn’t come to terms with it. Losing so many key members after the 2004 victory (speaking of Orlando Cabrera) was a hard pill to swallow… I knew I didn’t want to go through it again. ...
White Sox Trying to Acquire a “Big Fish”
Published 11/20/2007 by Fish@Bat at Fish@Bat: Blogging the Florida Marlins
The Chicago White Sox have acquired Cabrera. That is, Orlando Cabrera from the Angels.
But that’s not the story here.
Looks like they’re focused on an all-Cabrera left side of the infield as their GM Ken Williams claims that this deal clears some financial room ($3MM) for another deal. And that deal is:
“We’re not done yet. We’re still trying to land a big fish,” Williams said.
You know who which fish he’s talking about. ...

A short stop, or an extended stay?
Published 11/20/2007 by Jim at Sox Machine: Chicago White Sox blog
A short stop, or an extended stay? As a type B free agent with underwhelming peripherals and an an expiring contract, Jon Garland wasn't going to get much in return. Ideally, you'd want to find a team that's desperate enough like the Astros were last year, when they picked up Jason Jennings for Wily Taveras, Jason Hirsh and Taylor Buchholz. But then again, there's a reason why Tim Purpura doesn't have a job anymore, so Orlando Cabrera and cash for Garland is not an awful deal. In this respect, ...

... (a great move). He also traded Jon Garland to the Angels for Orando Cabrera , a move which confused a lot of Sox fans, including yours truly. Losing Gio Gonzalez and Fautino De Los Santos is bad for the Sox. The team’s farm system is now even more desolate than it was before the Swisher trade. However, Swish is a monster player, an OBP machine whose pull-happy stroke is perfect for the Sox’ stadium. The Quentin deal is decent if only because Cris Carter is a first base prospect, which is not the greatest of labels. Quentin is still young(ish) at 25, so there’s some hope ...
