Game Threat: Shitty City Reds @ Your Toronto Blue Jays
Drunk Jays Fans —
Here are some quick hits to tie you over until game time: The deal with Joey Votto's recent stay on the DL: It had a lot less to do with an ear infection and a whole lot more to do with last year's passing of his father. Roy Halladay threw from a mound today, and if all went well, he could get the start on Sunday or Monday, depending on who you believe. Micah Owings is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA in his last three outings. In his last start he helped out his own cause with a three run dinger. Brian Tallet is going on only three days rest tonight. If you were watching on Friday night, he wasn't exactly pleased to be getting the hook in favour of a pinch hitter after only 5 innings. On the 6-game road trip that the Jays just finished, Cito Gaston made 26 pitching changes. Brad Mills will replace Scott Richmond in ...
Votto Says Father's Death Lead to Panic, Disabled List
FanHouse —
by Pat Lackey Filed under: Reds, NL Central, MLB InjuriesNow that Joey Votto is back in Toronto with the Reds, he's a little more willing to talk about the circumstances that lead to his time on the disabled list with what the team with what the team termed "stress-related issues." Today he talked to the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay and told him that his father's death last August lead to depression and panic attacks that eventually landed him on the disabled list. I suppose some people will question Votto for this, but when you read his full statement, it's clear that he went through a pretty dark place this spring when his illness and subsequent inner ear infection piled on top of the grief and depression he went through over the winter, it was all just too much for him to juggle with baseball and that's ...
Votto Speaks About the Issues He's Been Dealing With
Red Reporter —
I'm going to delay the game thread for a bit tonight (don't worry, it will be up by game time), because I want to post some of what Joey Votto said today. This is all from John Fay, and I encourage you to go read it in its entirety. These are Votto's words:
As some of you know, my father passed away last August. The first day back I kind of put that all on back burner and just played baseball all the way to the end of September. I don’t want to use the word suppress because he was in my thoughts and I was dealing with it on a ...

Basement Dwellers —
Votto is back, hopefully to stay. Image by team doster via FlickrThis is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen from a professional athlete: “As some of you know, my father passed away last August. The first day back I kind of put that all on the back burner and just played baseball all the way to the end of September. I don’t want to use the word suppress because he was in my thoughts and I was dealing with it on a daily basis. But, as powerful a moment that is to lose your father so young, in a way I did suppress it. From August to the beginning of spring training, I was pretty severely depressed. I was dealing with the anxiety of grief and sadness and fear. Every emotion you can imagine that everyone goes through. “I had a really difficult time with it. I was by myself down in Florida. I ...

... disorder. It turns out that Votto had not fully reconciled with the fact that his father had passed away last August and it took a few days away from organized baseball with an ear infection to come to grips with it.
Bottom line, Joey was severely depressed and there was no amount of sporting life that could fix his sadness. Votto was taken out of a few games because of his respiratory infection but the doctors thought that there was something else deeper going on.
Via John Fay's Reds blog, here is Joey Votto in his own Canadian words with American spellings: ...
