(Chicago, IL) - Early Wednesday morning, the Chicago Cubs signed center fielder Jim Edmonds, who had been released just days earlier by the San Diego Padres. The move will displace youngster Felix Pie, who had finally started to put up solid numbers against right-handed pitching, and who plays excellent defense in center. So why would the Cubs sign the 37-year-old Edmonds to replace Pie? ...

... to stick it to Tony LaRussa and the Cardinals, which is really the only music to the ears of most Cubs fans right now. I really do not see any big risk in this at all. It is a cheap contract, if he does not perform well the Cubs will just release him, and if he does do well, he will add another quality bat to an already tremendous Cubs offense. However, I will probably throw up tomorrow when I see him trotting up to the plate in Cubs pinstripes. So all signs are indicating that the Cubs are about to sign Jim Edmonds, and for the most part, it's not a very popular move amongst Cubs fans. Which is entirely understandable, as Edmonds is a former Cardinal and has been a Cub-killer in his career. I think the move is idiotic as well, but not for any reason having to do with the Cardinals.
