Clarification on Barry Bonds' 'Talks' with Yankees Links2
The Bronx Bomber's report that former Giants outfielder Barry Bonds is in contract negotiations with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman comes from a source within the Yankees organization, though not through conventional channels. The variously reported denials eminating from the office of Bonds' agent Jeff Borris give us pause, but the world of free agent signings and negotations, ... [link]

Trade for Ichiro? No thanks
Published 7/18/2008 by Ed Valentine at Bugs & Cranks
The Yankees need offense and the Barry Bonds rumors are swirling, though they are likely base-less. New York did make one move Thursday, signing right-handed hitting first baseman Richie Sexson in hopes he can help them against left-handed pitching. That’s a no-lose move for the Yankees, even though Sexson hit just .218 with the Seattle Mariners this season with 11 home runs and 30 RBI. Wilson Betemit, the Yankees’ switch-hitting backup infielder, is a horrid right-handed hitter (.227 from 2005-2007). ...

Baseball Today: Friday, July 18

... the Yanks don't have the pitching, and now, says the New York Post's Joel Sherman, neither do they have the offense to overcome bad pitching. As old friend Bill Simmons might say, not good times in New York. WHAT I MEANT WAS NO: Just as the Diamondbacks did last week -- saying strongly they don't want Barry Bonds after waffling for a bit -- the Yankees are now calling Bonds-to-the-Bronx reports "nonsense" (New York Daily News) Even so, the rumors persist. BESIDES, WE JUST GOT A BIG BAT: Or at least a big ...

Sign Bonds

I've been against this idea for a while, but over the past few days I've been thinking about it and made a complete 180 on the idea. The Yankees should definitely sign Barry Bonds. Before responding, ask yourself this question; Do you want the Yankees to make the postseason or not? Then remind yourself that Andy Pettitte (a cheater) and Jason Giambi (a cheater) are on the roster, and two fan ...

Yankees call Bonds rumor nonsense
When Internet reports about the New York Yankees negotiating with Barry Bonds kicked in Thursday, phones buzzed in the Yankees' corridors of power. But there's no truth to a pinstriped pursuit of Bonds, according to a Yankee official, who said, "It's all nonsense." The rumors even made their way down to Wall Street, the official said. The official had calls from friends who work ...

Heyman's Latest: Yankees, Manny, Bowden, Pudge
SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up. Despite numerous reports yesterday that the Yankees were in the process of negotiating a deal with Barry Bonds, GM Brian Cashman reiterated his position on the matter saying, " We have had no discussions regarding Barry Bonds." Bonds To Boston? No Way, No How
Rumors of Barry Bonds playing in Boston have bared no fruit thus far. Here's several reasons why it likely won't ever happen. It all started on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball during the Red Sox/Yankees game on July 6, when Hall of Fame reporter Peter Gammons informed the viewing audience that the Sox have had "internal discussions" about signing the once immortal Barry Bonds, ...

Yankees Reach Tentative Agreement with Sexson
The Yankees, who have no interest in Barry Bonds * , have reached a tentative agreement with Seattle send-off Richie Sexson. Before his release, Sexson was hitting .218 with 11 homers this year, but was hitting .344 against lefties. This sounds like a move the Dodgers would make - using success against lefties to justify the signing of sub-.220 hitter - but the Yankees beat them to it.  ...
Sexson the City
The Yankees reach an agreement with Richie Sexson, not Barry Bonds. The Yankees plan on using Sexson exclusively against lefties. His line against southpaws this year is .344/.423/.623. I guess this doesn't rule out signing Bonds, the two could platoon...
Richie Sexson, not Barry Bonds, will be your newest Yankee
This morning, a blog I had previously never heard of — MLB News Online — posted an item saying that Barry Bonds and the Yankees were close to a deal and that it was "anticipated forthwith."   I didn't put much stock into the site's "confidential clubhouse source" and that was before my Y! Sports colleague Tim Brown backed up my hunch with good evidence. ...
Rosenthal: Sources: Yanks on verge of signing Sexson
Wasn’t NY just trying to dump those useless statues? Odd. The New York Yankees aren’t interested in signing Barry Bonds. But they are on the verge of adding another hitter — Richie Sexson. Sexson, released by the Mariners on July 10, is closing in on a deal with the Yankees, major-league sources say. He will play first base against left-handed pitching, likely reducing the playing time of ...
Yankees To Sign Richie Sexson
According to ESPN's Buster Olney , the Yankees reached a tentative agreement with first baseman Richie Sexson .  The idea is that Sexson will improve the team's performance against left-handed pitching. There's little risk, so you can't blame Brian Cashman for the move.  However, it should be noted that Sexson didn't hit lefties much in 2006-07 and only faced them 70 times this ...

Blackballing Barry
Brian Cashman is making a point of not denying the possibility that the Yankees might sign Barry Bonds. What I can't figure out is why no one else has tried. As far as I can tell he hasn't officially retired. It's that no team has offered him much money to play baseball. My impression was that last year he was starting to look washed up, and there was the chronic and ultimately season-ending ...
Barry Bonds: Blackballed!
How can the game’s most prolific home run hitter have a clean bill of health and a desire to play, but none of baseball’s 30 teams are interested in his services? Here’s my take on it. Giambi Gets Fan Campaigns While Bonds Sits And Waits
A column like this is why I’m a big fan of the New York Times’ William C. A Personal Story About Bobby Murcer
Bobby Murcer became a Yankee just after the glory times of the franchise (1949-64), and I followed his baseball exploits along with millions of others. There was always a pleasing presence about the man. It was a stunner when he was traded on October 21, 1974 to the San Francisco Giants for Bobby Bonds, Barry’s dad. That was where I entered the story. The summer of 1975 I was ...
Randy Wolf's Preference May Not Include New York
