The NHL Winter Classic was a rousing success for NBC. The second regular season outdoor game in NHL history drew a 2.4 overnight rating on NBC yesterday afternoon, the highest regular season NHL overnight since Wayne Gretzky's final game drew a 2.5/6 on FOX in 1999. The 2.4 overnight rating is higher than all but one NHL telecast last season -- Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Ducks

The NHL Winter Classic was a hit in Buffalo, and went as well as NBC could have expected. The Penguins' shootout victory over the Sabres drew a 38.1 rating in Buffalo, the site of the game. That rating is comparable to regular season Buffalo Bills games; a recent Bills/Browns game drew a 46.9. NBC could not have hoped for better results from the second regular season outdoor game in NHL history
