Indians pick up ‘08 options on Byrd, Borowski, Fultz

Not that this is a big shock, or anything, but indians.com has reported that the Tribe has picked up the 2008 option on starting pitcher Paul Byrd, as well as closer Joe Borowski and lefty reliever Aaron Fulz. As I said yesterday,the Indians may really want want Byrd to return as their fifth starter, it could mean they plan to use him in a trade, it could mean they want him as insurance for later in the season should he have to serve a 50-game suspension for admitting to using Human Growth Hormone (they wouldn’t have to pay the portion of his $8 million salary that he would have earned during any suspension). The Sporting News has named Mark Shapiro the Executive of the Year for the second time in 3 years, according to the PD. I can't say I'm surprised by this, although its great to hear. Limited payroll + great team that overcomes obstacles + surprise players + playoffs = Exec of the Year. Congrats to Shapiro. Give that man a raise!

There are many ways to run a baseball team. For teams with large payrolls, it's not all that complicated. The Yankees can seemingly just throw money at all their problems. The Angels have apparently decided to start signing a CF coming off a career year every offseason. The majority of teams, however, have to be a little more discriminant with their spending. Some are better at this than others. This becomes particularly clear with contracts given to relievers; it is quite obvious that different teams have very different philosophies regarding this.
