2007 Philadelphia Phillies
Published 2/22/2007 by Zach at The House That Dewey Built
... is closer than anyone to hitting his age on the radar gun; he’ll be 45 by the end of the year. His preparation and strategy are better than anyone in the game (yes, even Maddux) and he’ll get guys out with the kitchen sink well into his sixties. Entering his third decade in baseball, there’s little reason to believe he’ll be any worse than the first two. Twelve wins and an ERA around 4.50 will be a very nice contribution. Cole Hamels pitched much better after the break last year, increasing his K/BB from 1.83 to 4.21. The skinny lefty looks a little like Casey Fossum, except with an entourage of chicks and enough talent to fill an oil tanker. Every team needs a solid lefty in the rotation; the Phils have two.

Who Hates Scott Olsen?
Published 5/24/2007 by Mullet at FanHouse
... ase as Olsen angrily shouted and waved his glove at him. In the bottom of the inning, the Marlins totaled four extra-base hits to rally against Cole Hamels. Coincidence? "If that's what it takes, I'll start screaming in the top of the first," Olsen said. Olsen said there would be no carry-over with Utley, but the Phillies talked as though they'll remember the episode. "There's not much to say about it," Utley said. "He got a call he didn't like. And I didn't agree with him. It's pretty clear a lot of guys don't like him." Can anyone say: retribution? Cole Hamels can. Hamels said he was mindful of Olsen's remark. "I don't take comments like that lightly," Hamels said. "I wanted to beat him especially. I know a lot of guys on our team don't like him." And you know if Cole Hamels doesn't like him, then poor Scott's in trouble. After all, if Cole Hamels can knock down the Berlin Wall with one high fastball*, imagine what he can do to Olsen with one punch. *Cole Hamels fact number

Phillies Pitching Problems
Published 6/5/2007 at Phillies Nation
... So the Phillies split with the Giants over the weekend.  The Saturday and Sunday wins came in dramatic fashion with game winnings hits, fearless comebacks, and Phillies pitching handling Bonds.  The tailgate party was a blast - the beer was endless and the cheesesteaks on the grill were amazing.  Cole Hamels continues to prove he is the real deal.  His subtle maturity is noticeable both on and off the mound; and that why the one Cy Young he will win may just come this year.

Apparently, since Hamels was called up, he has had numerous fan clubs in the stands, going by various names, including "The Cole Patrol", "The Cole Mine" and "The Cole Train" (hell, it's Philly, these could be the same clowns each game and they just can't decide on a consistent name). Even more importantly, Cole Hamels has joined Chuck Norris and Tim Tebow (and I'm sure many more) as objects of over-the-top internet affections via the "fun fact" website. Chuck got no decision after giving up 4 runs in 6 innings (Cole gave up 4 in 7), as the Braves defense hung the loss on Moylan, who gave up the winning run on a single, sac bunt, and a Yunel throwing error on a grounder to short.
