The Freep has published a report stating the city of Detroit has finally awarded the contract allowing for the demolition of Tiger Stadium. Destruction will begin within a month's time. Detroit’s Economic Development Corp., a quasi-public arm of the city, awarded the demolition contract to a joint venture of MCM Management Corp. of Bloomfield Hills and The Farrow Group of Detroit. The team will tear down the stadium at no cost to the city and make its money by selling the scrap, estimated to run $1 million or more in value. TIGER STADIUM TO BE DEMOLISHED
Published 4/22/2008 by World of Isaac at The World of Isaac
I think I speak for everybody, when I say, THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED A LONG FREAKIN TIME AGO. Chalk this up as another reason Detroit sucks as a city. By the way, for those of you scoring at home, the last game played at Tiger Stadium occurred on September 27, 1999. Yep, almost 9 years later. Proud to call Detroit my hometown..... LINK

Clocking Ticking Louder on Tiger Stadium Decision

While Friend of the Fungo Gary Gillette and the non-profit Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy work feverishly to raise funds to avoid, ahem, razing the ballpark, the City of Detroit’s demolition wheels are in motion. At the very least, a demolition team is likely to start razing about 75% of the ballpark in May or June, as soon as the contract approved today is signed and the contractors get their effort in place. After years of wrangling with local preservation groups and other distracting matters , the city of Detroit has awarded a demolition contract for the final knee-whacking of Tiger Stadium . The city will pay nothing for the service; selling off the scrap from the neglected ol’ girl will raise over a million dollars for the firm awarded the contract. (We expect more auctions.) Tiger Stadium The preservation groups continue to fight to save some piece of the ballpark, whether it be a corner or a grandstand or one of Ernie Harwell’s laminated scorecards. However, they don’t seem to have the money to make it happen, so let the mixed-use ...

The Detroit Tigers Tales of Woe Continue

Intern Bill, who we may soon put on Willie Randolph watch, is mildly interested at the level of suck the Detroit Tigers have achieved this season. Jim Leyland must be on the hot seat! Oh, whoops, he’s not. The toothless Tigers are 11 games under .500, 11 games out of first, and their pitching staff has the fourth worst ERA in baseball (4.78). Bonderman’s hurt, Sheff’s creaky, and Zumaya, we can only assume, is on Death Cab for Cutie’s tour bus. It was reported over the weekend that Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman has undergone a procedure to remove a blood clot from underneath his ...
