    Well done, John!

I think Tim Raines is also very comparable to Tony Gwynn.  Gwynn, 398 win shares and .489 of a base advanced for every plate appearance.  Raines, 390 win shares and .547.  (And by further comparison, Jim Rice, 282 win shares and only .505.)

... How is this a good idea? I think it might be time to hang it up, Bill Conlin. Although the Thome/Conlin combo is quite something. This is pretty cool: pitch f/x cards for everyone in the majors. Is it really too much to ask to not irresponsibly speculate and jump to conclusions about the cause of Sean Taylor's death? "College is for losers- in football, and in life". Sure is, Carl. Tim Raines should be in the Hall of Fame. Posnanski's excessively long (4200 words) but brilliant post ...

... the context of things. Take Tim Raines. I was too young to discern the good players from the bad during his playing days (I’d dare say I only became “baseball cognizant” up until the mid nineties – and what a time to do it). So what I know about Raines is what I can learn from some research and from the fact that he was a member of the mythic White Sox staff of ‘94, who could’ve gone all the way. I’m glad there are some that think he ought to be in the Hall. Baseball Prospectus’ Jay Jaffe said it best: ...

ESPN/ABC’s version of Les Miles’ presser was different. I’m shocked, shocked to find that editing is going on in here! There’s never mercy for bad coaching. KSK has fun with what may be the defining moment of Gibbs 2.0. Rock “Raines is a clear-cut HOFer.” Any man who can steal second with a vile in his ...

... (Three WS equals one win. Therefore, Raines was worth about 130 wins during his career.) Using Win Shares Above Bench, Dave Studemund ranked Raines 44th among all position players, post-1900. Like Win Shares, Wins Above Replacement Value (or WARP3) takes into account defensive value. Raines' 124 career WARP3 ranks 62nd among position players and 83rd among all players (including pitchers). When you look at all the evidence (including articles by others), Raines is one of the top 50 or 60 position players of all time ...
