Know thy Opponent 2008: Penn State Nittany Lions
Published 6/17/2008 by T-Mill (noreply@blogger.com) at Off the Tracks
... Penn State has had a number of off the field incidents in recent years. So many that another Penn State blog, Run Up the Score, has had to comment on the number of incidents that ESPN is talking about. At Purdue we don’t really have room to throw stones in this area, especially as long as Torri Williams is affiliated with the program. As Run up the Score states, many of these are incidents that could have been avoided with only a modicum of common sense. They are still distractions, however, and must be dealt with. It is far from known what role these will play on the season. ...
Four Things Worth Reading: The Return!

... 1. That list is how long? A list of Penn State malfeasance since 2002 has been kicking around message boards for the past few weeks and may have even spurred ESPN to sic Outside the Lines on the Nits. It has 61(!!!) separate incidents featuring Penn State players and the long arm of the law. Or, sometimes, the long arm of nothing in particular: ...

... We'll have a summary of the ESPN piece at BSD on Sunday. As background reading, you may want to take a look at my analysis of the fradulent "Players Arrested Since 2000" list that can be found all over the internet, and has been sloppily cited as God's Honest Truth by ...
Breaking: ESPN Posts "Outside The Lines" Clips

... Now, let's be clear about two things. First, these are only four clips from a much larger piece, so let's not draw and conclusions about the entire body of ESPN's work. We'll get the whole story on Sunday morning. Second, Penn State's football program does have definite issues with discipline -- something I termed "a fighting and drinking problem" over at Run Up The Score a few weeks ago while picking apart the various legal incidents. But does it rise to the level where ESPN loads up the truck and drives to State College ...
Rest Assured, Stephen A. Smith Shares In Your Outrage

The ESPN segment on the Penn State football program (video here) essentially can be boiled down to the following arguments:
1. Penn State's football program is filled with criminals.
2. Joe Paterno doesn't seem to care all that much about it.
3. Penn State coaches are intentionally recruiting players with questionable behavioral issues in response to the losing seasons of 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004.
The first argument is compelling, though slightly overstated.
At this ...

... ? Well, here’s the key bit. More than that, though, it also becomes an issue of how the fans face such things. Do they look at it solely in what it means in wins and losses? Do they circle the wagons and descend into lunatic-fringe paranoia – seeing conspiracies and attempts to bring down their beloved program at every turn? Do they demand accountability from the program and their school? That’s what Penn State fans have to address. Is it all just an ESPN hit piece? Numbers without context ? Really? The PSU Football team has been a top- 5 10 resident of the ...

... on Friday, pointing out the generally unsourced nature of the allegations, and the fact that it's not really news that Penn State has a "fighting and drinking problem". I would have to agree that anyone who didn't know most of this probably also didn't know that Jim Tressel gets a little prickly when you ask him about "SEC speed", Stephen Garcia has mild to moderate ...

... So with that in mind I did the only thing I could do to try and lend some insight. I looked up all of the players on "The List" (starting with the apartment fight, if nothing came up after a few google searches that player was skipped) and backtracked in order to figure out who else, besides Penn State, offered a scholarship. ...

... players, yet there is no denying the fact that these kids continue to do stupid things, sometimes mere weeks after a different nationally embarrassing story breaks about their teammates. Another theory is that kids these days just aren't the same. I find this incredibly naive. Kids have been getting in trouble for a long time, it isn't a creation of the 21st century. It's also worth noting (and RUTS details this thoroughly), that this is mostly a drinkin' and ...
