After all, as Greg Wyshynski pointed out this morning at Puck Daddy, all it may have taken to keep Coburn in the lineup for Philadelphia was a clear plastic visor, a seemingly simple safety measure that more than a few NHL players continue to eschew despite the obvious benefits. But the question nobody seems to be asking is why so many players not only decline to wear a visor, but why the players as a whole through the NHLPA continue to resist making their use mandatory around the league? ...

Surely, it could have been worse. Yet wasn’t it also preventable?
Given where the injury was, it would appear a half-shield would have blocked the puck from hitting Coburn in the face. But he doesn’t wear one, and so he was lost for the game, and maybe more.

... Both are freaky, fluke injuries that can have you question the hockey-gods as to their motives. I understand the rationale for those who are pushing for visors to be worn by everyone, but I see the visor as an accomplice to the instigator-rule. Granted, the visor could’ve prevented the serious injury to Coburn’s face, but worn by others, they’re more likely to take a run at another player without consequences. ...
