What's $25 Mil Between Friends?

... Could Alex actually return to the Yanks? Lots of speculation in the NYT today. Don't bet on it. Jeffrey Gordon's suggestion that the Rodriguez plan was designed to keep the Yanks in the game: only a lawyer comes up with that kind of reading; it seems blind to contextual nuance. This bit about the timing of his opt-out announcement seems especially preposterous:
But here is the crucial piece of evidence that shows how much Rodriguez wants to wear pinstripes: the opt-out announcement during the final World Series game. We can assume that Rodriguez ...

... booed). Pete Abraham is absolutely right : we should all blame A-Rod in this matter, not Boras. Granted, Boras isn't a saint, but A-Rod could have controlled the terms of his departure from the Yanks, but he chose not to. Ultimately, Boras works for Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod has to know Boras' every action is a reflection upon him. Mike Lupica still blames Boras . Lupica's colleague Bill Madden agrees with Pete Abe, however . Tyler Kepner has the crazy notion that A-Rod could re-sign with the Yanks , albeit for less moolah. We don't see it happening. ...

Arod arod arod. Why is this story getting so much play? Well, it features baseball's "best player" in the country's biggest media outlet. In this corner, an increasingly popular MLB, just trying to let its former sad sack franchise enjoy it's second championship in peace and get on with the off-season business of squeezing its fanbase for every last dime. In the other corner, a player known for thinking neither the laws of the market nor baseball's rules of etiquette don't apply to him and his crass unpalatable agent. In other words, it's a battle for baseball's soul. ...
Trouble in Paradise: A-Rod Upset With Boras?

Filed under: New York, Yankees, AL East, MLB TransactionsLost amid the madness of A-Rod-gate 2007 -- in which Alex Rodriguez trumped the final innings of a quick World Series by announcing his opt-out -- is exactly what role Rodriguez had in the way the announcement was handled. After all, A-Rod's not a media professional; his confused dalliances with the New York press confirmed that long ago. Did he tell agent Scott Boras to coordinate the announcement just so, or did Boras take the initiative himself? If Tyler Kepner's source close to the duo is right, A-Rod might not be too happy with his representation right now: ...

Fourth and 1 in overtime? The Sports Rant would have made it -- just like Shaun Alexander. See this from Clare's notebook on the Seahawks latest flop. FOURTH-AND-MORRIS: Alexander wasn't available when the Hawks were facing a fourthand-1 in overtime. So the ball went to Maurice Morris, who was stopped inches shy of picking up the first down. "I would have made it," Alexander said. Alexander displaying his trademark confidence? Or Alexander dissin' a teammate? Or Alexander just being Alexander? ---Here's my FWAA (Football Writers Association of America) ballot for defense: DL1: Sedrick Ellis, USC DL2: Glenn Dorsey, LSU DL3: Chris Long, Virginia DL4: Quentin Groves, Auburn LB1: ...

We mentioned earlier that Andy Pettitte has until Wednesday to decide whether he wants to exercise his option for 2008. But Hank Steinbrenner wants Pettitte to take as much time as he needs. "As far as I’m concerned, he can take longer than that to decide, as far as coming back to the Yankees," Hank Steinbrenner said. "He can take the time he wants, because we really want him back."
