Chicago Tribune: Cubs keep Fontenot, cut Cintron; Murton odd man out Both Fontenot and Cedeno wound up earning roster spots. The odd man out is outfielder Matt Murton, whom the Cubs will try to trade. He could be sent to Triple-A Iowa if general manager Jim Hendry doesn’t believe he would get true value in return. “We like Matt a lot, and I think on a lot of clubs he’s an every-day player in left field,” Hendry said. “We’re just in a spot where on the corners we have two outstanding players, and we needed somebody like Reed Johnson who could play some in center. “Matt knows ...

Wood still hasn't walked a batter this Spring......Carlos Marmol had control issues again as he walked two batters and gave up a run in his 1.1 innings of work.......Carmen Pignatiello apparently lost his spot on the team to Sean Marshall (?) but continued to put up zeroes as he closed out the Cubs victory with another scoreless inning......The Chicago Tribune had an article about how Lou Piniella let IF Mike Fontenot know he made the team and it seems like Fontenot was as surprised as I ...

Just expanding on cubsfan2883's theme.
From the Trib:
Lou Piniella has a unique way of giving his players good news, as Mike Fontenot discovered on Tuesday at Cubs camp.
Piniella sidled up to Fontenot during batting practice and asked him a simple question.
"He said, 'Hey, have you got a place in Chicago?' " Fontenot recalled Wednesday before the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium. "I was like, 'No.' And he said, 'Well, you ...
Cubs Bench finalised, not good.

According to today’s Trib , the Cubs’ bench is all set. Remember the Gashouse Gang? The Big Red Machine? The Whiz Kids? Well, this bunch of stiffs is nothing like any of those. Fontenot Cedenot Blancot Johnso… t Ward No Pagan, of course, no Jones/Floyd and no Murton means that most of what little pop the Cubs’ bench had last year is playing somewhere else. Ward is a PH stud, of course, and I love him like my own brother - but the rest of them… well, not so much. Average the career lines of those five guys and you get : .256/.314/.401. Hmm… not great, but actually not bad, ...

... Because the Cubs are dumb and don’t know how to protect young, cheap, good assets, Matt Murton is also available. He’s a very good fourth outfielder — a much better hitter than either Anderson or Blanco, and seems to be a decent enough defensive corner outfielder — but he probably will cost an actual, live prospect. Both Thames and Murton are likely to engender a fair amount of interest from other teams. Murton’s better; let’s hope the Cubs don’t know that. ...
