Cubs Retain Wood
Published 11/26/2007 by Adam Godson at Bugs & Cranks
After years of conditioning, I’ve come to expect the Cubs to do the dumbest thing possible, so it was a foregone conclusion this offseason that the Cubbies would either a)Let Kerry Wood walk, probably to a division rival or b)Sign Kerry Wood to a long-term deal with no incentives and all guaranteed money. Imagine my surprise at the report that the Cubs inked Wood to a one-year, $4MM deal. The same mastermind that brought you Jason Marquis and Ryan Dempster seems to have gotten one right. Looks like a nice low-risk deal for the Cubs, which means that Kerry’s ligaments are ...
Cubs Reportedly Sign Kerry Wood
Published 11/26/2007 by Shyster at ShysterBall
Seems like an excellent deal for the Cubs: 1 year, $4M. I say excellent because it keeps in town a guy who really stands a chance to be an impact arm in the bullpen, but doesn't commit them to more than a year which, for a guy with Wood's injury history, could be dicey. I really thought he'd sign for two years at that price somewhere.
Cubs And Kerry Wood Don't Know How to Quit One Another

... Wood signed a one-year deal, worth $4 million according to MLB Trade Rumors, and will return to his role as a set-up man. He's passing up longer term deals with other teams for another chance on the North Side. I think it's a good move on both sides. Wood increased his velocity all season and was throwing quite hard in October and is a useful weapon out of ...

Wood Back with Cubs
Published 11/26/2007 by Jack Cobra at Cobra Brigade
... For the Cubs, this gives them another hard throwing reliever to go with Carlos Marmol and Bobby Howry to close out the games. The one year deal is in the Cubs favor because of the history Wood has with injuries. As for Wood, MLB Trade Rumors is suggesting that the Cubs offered him more money on the one year deal, but this seems kind of a risk for him. What if he gets injured again and then he'll have to sign for less money next season. I guess he feels confident that he'll be healthy and have a good enough season that he'll be able to sign for more than $5 million next season. ...

Monday, November 26, 2007 (11/26/2007 02:34:00 PM) - Al Kerry Wood stays with the Cubs , turning down 2 year offers from several clubs, including the Crew. I agree with MLBTR, I thought he'd get about 2y/$10M, even though he is an injury risk. I feel he must feel he has the potential to really cash in if he can simply put together a single healthy campaign. ...
Chicago Has Wood Again
Published 11/26/2007 by Sooze at Babes Love Baseball
... We're talking multi-year offers here, people. The 30-year-old righty may make an additional $3.45 million in performance bonuses, rounding out the hind-end of the bullpen. So, Chicago is Wood's home, it's where he's pitched for his entire career, blah blah blah... what's important is the over/under on his return lasting 10 starts before he (inevitably) hurts himself. I'll take the under. [Chicago Sun-Times] | [The Curse of Wrigley Field] | [MLB Trade Rumors]
Should the Cubs Pursue Brian Roberts?
Published 1/10/2008 by Mike Pindelski <info@beyondtheboxscore.com> at Beyond the Box Score: Front Page Posts
The Cubs have made plenty of noise this winter with the signings of both Kosuke Fukudome and Kerry Wood and it appears Jim Hendry may not be done yet. Yesterday rumors begin to swirl around the web regarding the Brian Roberts to Cubs trade rumors. Some sources originally claimed a deal was imminent, while others claimed the Orioles asking price may be a bit too high for Jim Hendry's likings. Whatever the case, talks are clearly taking place between the two clubs and Brian Roberts may very well start at second base for the Cubs come ...
