Yankee's Monument Park: Ruth, Mantel, Pope Benedict XVI?
Published 4/21/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
Move over, Joltin’ Joe, Babe Ruth, and Mickey Mantel, you’re about to be joined by someone with a lower batting average on Monument Park. The Knights of Columbus are donating a bronze plaque to commemorate Pope Benedict XVI's April 20 Mass. The pontiff was expected to bless the plaque in a private ceremony before the Mass today. The 105-pound papal plaque, which is 39.5 inches tall and 27 inches wide, will be located in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park, along with plaques memorializing Masses celebrated there by Pope Paul VI (Oct. 4, 1965) and Pope John Paul II (Oct. 2, 1979), also gifts of the Knights of Columbus. The Benedict ...
Clubs Buying Out Arbitration and Free Agent Years
Published 4/22/2008 by Jordan I Kobritz at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
For Evan Longoria, Christmas came early. After only seven days of Major League service, the Tampa Bay Rays third baseman signed a contract guaranteeing him $17.5 million over the next six years. The deal could be worth a total of $44 million over nine years if the club exercises certain options. Because Longoria didn’t begin the season in the Major Leagues, he wouldn’t have been eligible for arbitration until at least 2011, meaning the Rays could have paid him the Major League minimum salary - $390,000 this year - for the next three years and then taken their chances in arbitration for three more years after that. ...

Fantasy Stats Case: NFLPA Legal Brief in Support of MLB
Published 4/22/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
In baseball parlance, Major League Baseball is 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in CBC Distribution and Marketing, Inc. v. MLB Players Association/MLB Advanced Media or as it is often called, the "Fantasy Stats" case. The case involves whether statistics, in conjunction with a player's name, is protected under the First Amendment, or as MLB sees it, a violation of right of privacy. As this document shows, it's not just MLB that has an interest in this case, so does the NFL (and for that matter, the NBA, NHL, PGA, NASCAR, and WNBA who filed briefs in support of the case in the US Court of Appeals for the 8th District). For ...

Published 4/23/2008 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
Wayne Krivsky’s short-lived tenure as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds is over. Krivsky was fired today, and replaced with former St. Louis Cardinals GM, Walt Jocketty. The Reds started the season at 9-12, and the writing was on the wall when new owner Bob Castellini hired Jocketty last season. As reported by The AP: Jocketty is the team’s fourth general manager in six years, an instability that has prevented them from setting a course. The Reds also have been through two owners, four managers and an interim manager during that span. The uncertainty at the top has contributed to Cincinnati’s worst ...
