... first used restrictor plates in 1971 to slow the big-block V-8s that exceeded 426 cubic inches in use then by the big factory teams. When NASCAR went to smaller 358-cubic-inch engines (1974), it took teams awhile to regain the lost speed and in 1987, restrictor plates made a return at Daytona and Talladega. Also, a compression limit was implemented in 1996 to cut horsepower.
