Biggs: Smith learned well from Muhammad in Carolina
The National Football Post » Hot News and Rumors — Muhsin Muhammad was never afraid to take some credit for helping bring a young wide receiver in Steve Smith along at the NFL level. Smith learned well from Muhammad, becoming a Pro Bowl talent for the Carolina Panthers and surpassing his mentor as the go-to target for the offense. He s picked up some tricks of the trade when it comes to public relations, too. It was Muhammad, after a 52-9 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Christmas Even in 2000, that found reason to rejoice following the season-ending loss before the cross-country flight home. Muhammad had 10 catches in the game to give him 102 for the season. From the ashes and the rubble, Muhammad said. I guess you could say a flower grew today. Muhammad was also infamous for going out to practice one day with name D-Coy taped on the back of his jersey, a not-so-subtle hint to the coaches about how he felt ...

Steve Smith: "I'm no longer an asset"
ProFootballTalk.com — The Panthers won 28-21 in Tampa Sunday for their second straight win, but all is not peaceful in Carolina. Wide receiver Steve Smith called the win "bittersweet" after the game. "We get the win, but I have a limited role," Smith said. "So, obviously, I see this game as showing I'm no longer an asset to this team." Smith was asked a follow up question, as he began to make his way to the shower, according to the Rock Hill Herald. "That's all I got. My name's Steve Smith and I stand by that." Smith caught one pass for four yards in Carolina's win, a game in which "Bad Jake" Delhomme made an appearance with only 65 yards passing on 17 attempts, with two interceptions. Delhomme tried throwing to Smith five times, with one interception and three incompletions. It's tempting to look at Smith's bold statement and see it as a signal that he wouldn't ...

Football Outsiders — compiled by Rory Hickey BUT THEN IT MIGHT BE DAN SNYDER'S FAULT "I think a lot of people made the comment, '[Zorn's] not out there playing in the games.' That's the truth of the matter. If you want to blame someone, look at the film. Look at the guys who are out there trying to play. We haven't been doing a great job, bottom line; we haven't been doing a great job. I think the blame lies with us. I think the blame lies with us. I think we're the ones out there playing every day, practicing, trying to do the right thing, but I don't know if we've got the right personnel here to do it." -- Redskins defensive back DeAngelo Hall on the Redskins' possible lack of personnel. Clearly he isn't part of who he's talking about ( Washington Post ...

What Does Jake Delhomme Need To Do To Be Benched?
The Sporting Blog — ... Make like the Dolphins and dish out a healthy Wildcat package ... because you've got the guys to do it. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were a lethal rushing tandem last season. With no threat of a passing game and a traditional run attack, they're largely wasted at the moment. The only player who is being utilized even worse is Steve Smith, who has declared that he's no longer an asset to the team. Picture a backfield with those three players constantly in motion, never knowing where to send your linebackers. You occasionally slide ...
