Ex-Red Wing Darren McCarty is attempting a comeback with the Flint Generals of the United Hockey League, the Generals announced in a release. McCarty, who helped the Wings to three Stanley Cups as part of the Grind Line will practice with the team at 10 a.m. Monday and will sign autographs at 6 p.m. before a game against Port Huron at Lapeer's Perani Arena. McCarty last played April 7, 2006 with the Calgary Flames. The Wings did not bring him back after the 2003-04 season and the locked-out 2004-05 season. Happy New Year, everyone! Almost... Larry Brooks had a long rant about the complaints against New York Ranger Colton Orr's open ice hit on Carolina's Matt Cullen last week. Brooks wants everyone to relax, saying checking is a part of the game. I mention this all only because I was in South Carolina last week, watching the game on Fox Sports South, and I was really, really shocked at how the announcers were freaking out over the hit.
