Community Projection: Richie Sexson

... Still, though, what does that mean for the Mariners? To answer this question, we have to think about what Richie's likely to contribute in 2008. Dave mentioned the "prOPS" statistic today - a measure of what a player's batting line should be based on his balls in play and a standard BABIP - and since it's a decent indicator of future performance, I think it'll serve our purposes here. Richie's "predicted OPS" in 2007 was .820. Not only is that not a black hole; it's actually pretty nice. ...
USS Mariner: Dave’s Offseason Plan, v.2007

USS Mariner: Dave’s Offseason Plan, v.2007 I’m taking into account the logistics of the people in place - John McLaren is the manager, Bill Bavasi is the GM, Chuck Armstrong is the president, and the team is coming off an 88 win season. Trading a bunch of veterans and turning over half the roster just isn’t going to happen in this kind of framework. These guys want to keep their jobs, and to do that, they’re going to try to win as many games in 2008 as possible. They have inherent biases towards experience that have to be accounted for. So, I’ve tried to take all those external ...

... ... The question, ultimately, will be whether USC officials -- coaches or otherwise -- knew or should have known or obviously tried not to know what was going on. Might this be another reason for Pete Carroll's eyes to wander toward the NFL? ---Gents at USS Mariner come up with an off-season plan with the Mariners . Found it interesting because it's so unspectacular and therefore realistic. Here are Dave's transactions: Trade Richie Sexson and $4.5 million in cash to San Francisco for Ray Durham Trade Ben Broussard to Baltimore for random prospect with a pulse. Non-tender ...

... Well, it isn't just me. Part of the U.S.S. Mariner recommended offseason plan is sending Sexson to the Giants for Durham. They'd even give up some mock cash. Mock cash can buy some sweet mock things. ...
Community Projection: Ray Durham

... Thing is, prior to last season, Durham was one of the most consistent players in baseball. Last season's abomination snapped an 11-year streak of above-average hitting. Smarter folks than I think that Durham might rebound. There is some logic to a Durham renaissance, and the U.S.S. Mariner details it pretty well. It doesn't hurt that he's spanking the ball in March. ...
