Are Spurs a dynasty?
Published 6/14/2007 by Ben Maller at Ben Maller's Sports Rumors & Notes
... One of Gregg Popovich's favorite phrases is "Get over yourself." As in, "You're not such hot stuff. Get over yourself." It's an ego-puncturing mantra that has helped him build the San Antonio Spurs into a dynasty as its general manager and coach, even though he is loath to call them a dynasty. "When I think of dynasties," Popovich said yesterday, "two come to my mind real quick: UCLA and Bill Russell. Everything else is just talk after that." So, where does that leave the Spurs, who are one win away from their fourth title in nine seasons? Nowhere near the D word, they say. "You have to win at least five in a row," forward Bruce Bowen said. "I think the Boston Celtics are a dynasty. You look at all the banners they have and all the championships that they won. That's a dynasty. . . . It's no knock against what we've accomplished. But I think dynasty is just a bit much."
