The 44-year-old Wells was designated for assignment by his hometown San Diego Padres on Aug. 9 and placed on release waivers four days later. He cleared waivers last Thursday and became a free agent. The Dodgers will be his ninth team in a 21-year major league career. An act of desperation I suppose, but I'm not sure if it's David Wells or the Los Angeles Dodgers who are more desperate at this point.

The Dodgers have had lots of injuries to their starting pitching, but at this point, Wells probably isn't any better than  Brett Tomko, who he'll replace in the rotation, or Mark Hendrickson.
