On the MTVization of ESPN, and ESPN v. The Blogosphere
Published 7/23/2007 by Adam J. Morris <info@lonestarball.com> at Lone Star Ball: Front Page Posts
Over at SBNation's Georgia Bulldogs website, there is a very good (and very lengthy) critique of ESPN, and the way it chooses to program and market itself, that I'd encourage folks to check out.

... While you're at it, I'd like you to take a run through on T. Kyle King's dissertation about the state of ESPN coverage and why those of us in the blogosphere find it rather uh distasteful (to put it mildly). I'm not arrogant enough to believe that bloggers are going to take over the media, but we are becoming more relevant as this whole thing evolves. ...

... I've critiqued ESPN and the family of networks before, but my criticism came mostly from the viewpoint of a myopic, disenfranchised A's fan who felt neglected repeatedly by the Worldwide Leader. This is one of the best critiques of ESPN from a fellow SportsBlogs Nation blogger who frames the argument in an almost open-and-shut case format. It's when I read something like this from one of my fellow SB Nation guys that I realize just how great this network of blogs truly is. Kudos, Kyle, kudos. ...

... Speaking of ESPN. Kyle has a great piece on the WWL and their role within the Blogoshere. Its no secret that Kyle does some great writing but he hits this one right out of the park, as this is a great piece that references a lot of great anecdotes. Yes, it's a bit of a read but I can find no person that I would rather read when addressing this sort of topic. To Kyle: Well Played Sir!! ...

... This has nothing to do with the Bills, but it deserves mentioning as well. If you hate ESPN as much as I do (and by ESPN I mean "Who's Now" and "Baseball Tonight"), be sure to check out this article by Dawg Sports, SB Nation's Georgia Bulldogs blog. This isn't your normal ESPN bashing session (which are always nice); this article is incredibly well-presented, eloquent and intelligent. It points out every flaw of ESPN in a way that isn't derogatory, it's just true. One of the best articles I have ever read, mainstream media or not. You simply have to check this out. ...

... No dumbest thing ever this week for a number of reasons. For one, this week's column is already going to be pretty lengthily. Secondly, the thing that continues to bug me is the continued contempt the Worldwide Leader has for its viewers. I've taken my fair share of swings at that particular deceased equine. And to be honest, others have done it far more effectively than I ever could. ...

... for Kyle's essay/analysis/treatise on ESPN. Now, making fun of ESPN and complaining about ESPN are nothing new, and are easy to do: I'm guessing you do it every time "Who's Now?" or "The Bronx is Burning" comes on your TV (I know I do). Kyle's post is notable, though, for being especially thorough and well-organized. That's not surprising, considering his law background. It's also pretty lengthy (also unsurprising, considering the law background). But if you've got the time, it's worth a read. ...

... Criticizing ESPN's increased emphasis over the years on self and style over substance, the mindset of believing it is the story instead of whichever sports news item it covers at any given moment, is more than fair game. Dawg Sports recently wrote an excellent dissertation on this. But when the high flyer sports blogosphere members are one and all devoted to aping ESPN in general and Bill Simmons in particular, exactly what is their point or purpose in ripping ESPN? Becoming what you profess to oppose eviscerates your argument before it starts. ...

... To conclude (finally), the sports blogosphere has matured. The work produced therein is tremendous and, often times, wholly different than that which we get from many mainstream media outlets. Calling to task the latter group remains a useful, important topic, but only insofar as it is a thoughtful critique. Moreover, it has become counter-productive to add fuel to the blog vs. mainstream media fire. There's no reason for us to have an antagonistic relationship, and we're past the point of needing to differentiate ourselves for the purpose of validation. ...

That's because it undermines their role as gatekeeper of sports information and crafter of storylines. (To see the full story on this, see Kyle's brilliant analysis.) ...

I've got nothing particularly useful to add, but thought this was one of the best written blog posts I've read in a while. So-- nice job.
Also, I have no idea why this would be tagged as an NCAA basketball story.
