Could Lugo Be the 4th Outfielder?
Fenway West - A Boston Red Sox Blog —
Since the Detroit trade deal is pretty much dead, the Red Sox must decide what to do with Julio Lugo. Last season Lugo was a disaster at the plate and in the field, the calls for his benching grew louder until an injury ended his season. With Jed Lowrie emerging as the every day shortstop Lugo is out of a job. If the Red Sox do keep him he will have some value as a backup infielder and outfielder. With Coco gone the Red Sox do not have a 4th outfielder and Coco could be that guy. While he was with the Dodgers he did play some games in the outfield and the Red Sox were prepared to use him in the outfield when Moss had emergency surgery last season. He would be a very ...

Tigers' Interest in Julio Lugo Cools; What Next?
FanHouse —
by Andrew Johnson Filed under: Red Sox, Tigers, MLB RumorsComing off of a last-place finish in the AL Central, the Tigers are desperate for upgrades all over the place, including at shortstop, but after splurging big last winter, they're looking to do it at a discount. As such, Detroit has targeted the Red Sox, who have a logjam at shortstop with rookie Jed Lowrie overtaking Julio Lugo in midseason, and the ability to absorb an albatross contract, namely Nate Robertson's or Dontrelle Willis', in recent weeks. But according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, those ...

Has It Really Come to Alex Cora?
Bless You Boys —
... But if Detroit is going to let Edgar Renteria go, the reasonable expectation (unless the intent is to blatantly dump salary from the payroll) is to get someone better. Even if the improvement is only on the defensive side. This is why many fans are fine with the Tigers starting Ramon Santiago at shortstop next season. And it's why so many turned up their noses at the idea of trading for Julio Lugo. (We might not have to worry about that anymore, however.) ...

Starting Pitcher: The Fifth Starter, plus Niese
MetsBlog.com —
According to Joel Sherman, in a post to his blog for the New York Post, the Mets intend to a) acquire a front-end starting pitcher, b) also acquire a fifth starter, but c) give Jon Niese a chance to win the job in spring training.
In fact, Omar Minaya told reporters the above gameplan while at the GM Meetings in California last month.
That said, Sherman suggests the Mets look at Cubs RHP Jason Marquis, M’s LHP Jarrod Washburn and Tigers RHP Nate Robertson, all of whom will be available, to compete with Niese.
The Red Sox and Tigers had been discussing a potential swap of Dontrelle Willis or Robertson for Julio Lugo, but ...
