Did you know? A "Packer" is an axe wielding maniac. A "Brown" is a goblin.

1958 Commercial: 'Where You Find Pro Football, You Find Marlboro Cigarettes'
Published 2/19/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
... That video, courtesy of Hogs Haven, comes from 1958, and it extols the virtues of two great American institutions, professional football and Marlboro cigarettes. It's a reminder of a different time in America, a time when NFL players smoked in the locker room at halftime, a time when an advertising slogan like "you get better makins" apparently made sense, a time when racist caricatures of American Indians were still tolerated. ...
The NFL, brought to you by cigarettes and racism

... Hogs Haven dug up
this beautiful clip of an NFL commercial from 1958, back when pro football
was proudly sponsored by Marlboro. What better way to relax after running a deep
post than to enjoy a nice, relaxing pack of Marlboro Reds. One cigarette, and
you may never run again. ...
The old NFL days were sweet

Nothing says football like smokes. Watch as Chris Schenkel (died: 2005, emphysema) shills for Marlboro while cartoon mascots represent the NFL teams of 1958. H/T: Hogs Haven

... part of that video is the cartoon figures of the teams…many of which seem to have nothing to do with the actual team names. Why are the Cleveland Browns represented by a goblin wearing a helmet? And why are the Packers represented by a dude with an axe who’s trying to smack the Philadelphia Eagle?
Chris Schenkel closes the commercial by telling viewers, “The better the makins, the better the smoke.” Truer words were never spoken.

Some great, vintage commercials have been dug up by Mister Irrelevant and Hogs Haven in the recent days and since no one wants to talk about last night's debacle yet, I figured now would be as good of a time as any to throw this one out there: It's kind of weird how his basketball career was never the same after that ad in 1996. Then again, Manute Bol never recovered from this 3 point barrage either.
When Smoking Was Still Cool

... this week, but it’s worth another look, just for its historical significance. It’s a TV spot from 50 years ago — complete with horribly stereotyped cartoon mascots — in which Marlboro cigarettes declares itself a proud sponsor of the National Football League.
There must be some old ads like this for football in other countries, right? I mean, aside from the old “Accrington Stanley? Who’er dey?” spot…
