The Angels optioned Rich Thompson to AAA Salt Lake to make room for Scot Shields on the 25-man roster.
Ex-Dodger Edwin Jackson started his regular season with a flourish by limiting the Yankees to one run through six innings on the road in a game the Rays ultimately won 6-3. Ex-Angel Troy Percival notched his first save with Tampa Bay by retiring Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, and Bobby Abreu, the Yanks' 1-2-3 hitters, in order.
