From Diamond:
Dodgers open to trading the "kids"
Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti will be looking for a shortstop among other things before the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline, and the team is willing to adjust its philosophy of keeping their young players off-limits.
"We're more open-minded to who we may have to move," Colletti said.
Asked if he were referring to the young players, Colletti said, "They're not really young kids anymore."
Colletti's comments echoed what owner Frank McCourt told me earlier in the ...

Class AA right-hander James McDonald, Class AAA shortstop Chin-Lung Hu and third baseman Andy LaRoche are among the Dodgers' prospects likely drawing consideration form the Indians.

... Colletti said.
Normally I'd say that what the Pirates should do is to wait a few days and let Colletti see what Nomar Garciaparra's shortstop defense is actually like. The guy will be 35 in two weeks, he can't stay healthy and he was moved off the position years ago. But Colletti already appears to recognize that he's got problems, and that a good shortstop won't come cheaply. Maybe it's still possible to get Kemp.

It's nice to have a smart GM on our side

I failed to post this earlier today, but apparently the Jack Wilson to the Dodgers rumors are heating up. John Perrotto wrote a story about it today, one popped up in the LA Times, and one showed up at a site called PE.com (links via Charlie and BBTF). I'm still guessing that the trade would center around some lesser prospects (I'm thinking James McDonald, just because we're so pitching poor), but Colletti's been making some crazy quotes that are making people think that he might be willing to part with a top prospect (think James Loney or Matt Kemp) ...

... a lot." Without naming names, he said he has learned that some kids are ready to be winners, and some are not. "You have to be patient, but, on the other hand, young players have to be receptive and respectful, eager to learn and listen," he said. "How many years of experience do we have with our coaches in that clubhouse? Don't you think maybe these guys could learn something from them?" And rightfully so. (Note that Ned "Hot Seat" Colletti has echoed similar statements, but he's got more to worry about than the media.) ...
