Pitching Mechanics: James Shields
DRaysBay — ... Over at Driveline Mechanics, I did an analysis of James Shields' mechanics... James (Jamie) Shields, a 16th round draft pick (466th overall) in 2000, hails from Hart HS in Newhall, CA. He lost his 2002 season due to a shoulder injury, but has otherwise been effective at every level of baseball, progressing from low-A ball in 2001 to an MLB debut in 2006, throwing 124 innings for Tampa Bay and posting a 4.38 FIP, 7.4 k/g, 2.7 bb/g, and 1.28 hr/g stat line. He also contributed 6.8 win shares, quite good for a rookie who had limited action in the majors at age 24. ...

THT Live: Driveline Mechanics blog
The Hardball Times — Driveline Mechanics blog by Dave Studeman April 07, 2008 There's a new blog in town about pitching mechanics. It's Kyle Boddy's Driveline Mechanics and it looks to be another good entry in the field. If you haven't seen other similar sites, check out Chris O'Leary's website (Chris also posts at Baseball Digest Daily ), the Saber Scouting blog and Alex Eisenberg's work at Baseball Intellect and here at the Hardball Times . Dave is the manager of the Baseball Graphs website. and a regular contributor to Heater , a PDF fantasy magazine for the digital age. ...

Pitcher Analysis: Zack Greinke
Royals Review — ... drivelinemechanics.com... I have to admit, Zack Greinke has been one of my favorite pitchers to watch ever since he made it to the big leagues with the Royals. Yes, I’m an Indians fan, but like the folks over at Baseball Prospectus, his stuff is exciting to watch. He throws both of his fastballs at varying speeds and locations, he has a great curveball that he occasionally hangs at 70 mph, and flashes a plus changeup and slider combination to boot. Here’s his Pitch f/x data: ...

Concern over Joba’s Mechanics?
New York Yankees — That’s what Kyle Buddy from Driveline Mechanics brings up in his post about Joba Chamberlain’s mechanics. Buddy speaks (and shows through pitches and GIF motion shots) about why Yankee fans should have some sense of worry about Joba’s future. To Buddy, the tension that Joba puts on his arm alongside showing signs of the dreaded “Inverted W” and/or the “Inverted L” and an awkward follow-through can potentially bring injury troubles. Whether you agree or disagree, Buddy brings up some interesting data to back up his claims. For comparison ...

A mechanical breakdown
River Avenue Blues — A few blog posts about the Yankees hurlers and their pitching mechanics have been making the rounds lately. Originating from a new site run by Kyle Boddy, a 24-year-old baseball analyst, called Driveline Mechanics, the two Yankee-related entries focus on Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain. To ruin the endings, Boddy loves Wang’s mechanics but feels that Chamberlain’s put him at risk for injury. Boddy writes, “I think Joba’s injury concerns are well-founded. He has a lot of the classic signs of hyperabduction, rushing, hung arms syndrome, and a bad followthrough.” ...

Pitcher Analysis: Cliff Lee
Let's Go Tribe! — ... [Editor's Note: I invited Kyle Boddy of Driveline Mechanics  to analyze an Indians pitcher. Here's his statistical and mechanical analysis of Cliff Lee's amazing start to the 2008 season - Ryan] Phrases that I have heard about Cliff Lee throughout the course of the 2007 season: He’s a bum! Good riddance - enjoy Double-A, you idiot. We should have traded you for Matt Murton while we had the chance! Phrases that I have heard about Cliff Lee throughout the course of the 2008 ...

Pitcher Analysis: Tim Lincecum
Driveline Mechanics — The 98 mph fastball. The knee-buckling curveball. The leap off the mound. The electric arm. Based on readers’ comments and repeated emails about Lincecum, I don’t need to say much more. Check out the sickest curveball you’ll see this side of Josh Beckett after the break. First, a preview Disgusting. More on that later. Statistical Analysis I won’t spend too much time on this, since people primarily want to ...

Draftee Report: Andrew Cashner (Cubs, 14th overall)
Driveline Mechanics — Andrew Cashner, the former TCU closer, moved into that role after seeing mediocre results as a starter. After being converted to a reliever, he saw his fastball velocity spike from 90-92 to 96-98. The difference between 92 and 98 is insane - much, much more than a straight linear relationship like 80 to 90 (as big of a jump that is). While teams were wary of this sudden jump in velocity, he absolutely dominated as the closer and showed no signs of fatigue, so the Cubs selected him ...

Quick Note: Mike Farrenkopf
Driveline Mechanics — This video has been popping up on various message boards that I frequent and has generated some discussion. The pitcher in the video above is Mike Farrenkopf, one Dr. Mike Marshall’s promising young college-bound pitchers. You’ll note that he has an unorthodox throwing motion, which is similar to the clip of Jeff Sparks that you can see on the Pitching page of the site. He is headed to Incarnate Word University to pitch (where his coach will allow him to throw with the Marshall body/arm actions), and I look forward to seeing how well he does ...

Gregor Blanco: The Next Ichiro?
Driveline Mechanics — Check it out: Pretty interesting, isn’t it? I’m not sure if he does this often, but I saw it the other day on a Braves telecast and figured it would be worth sharing. The main detriment of this approach is that it can move the level of your eyes, giving the ball more movement than it really has, making it difficult to pick out the final location of the pitch. It should help with hip rotation and add a bit of power, though. If Blanco employed the “running swing” technique of Ichiro, it would help him get down ...

Link: J.J. Putz - Under the Knife
Driveline Mechanics — Mariners’ closer J.J. Putz is mentioned in Will Carroll’s latest Under the Knife column (subscription required) at Baseball Prospectus. Since the article requires a paid subscription (which is worth every penny), I won’t talk at length about what he says, but I did want to mention this part of what Will said: I’m a bit hesitant to give all the blame/credit to this since Putz “slammed closed” his elbow and that hard hyperextension is not often the result of a mechanical change. ...

Pitch Analysis: The Gyroball (Part One)
Driveline Mechanics — ... seemed like a great opportunity to do so. Will eventually taught me how to throw a two-seam gyroball (though not in the way Tezuka/Himeno teach it), and after I flew back to Seattle to work on it, I purchased the books from Beta Endorphin - the pitching dojo where the pitch is taught. After researching and having bits and pieces of the book translated, I made my own gyroball trainers to help me learn how to throw the four-seam and two-seam gyroball variants. Example of a four-seam gyroball ...

News: Lack of Updates
Driveline Mechanics — Sorry for the lack of updates recently, folks - real life has been getting in the way of both the authors of the blog. Chad is going through some rigorous med school tests and is taking a well-deserved vacation to Vegas, and I’m going through the final stages of planning my wedding (July 24th) and all the craziness that goes along with it. Thanks for sticking with us, and we’ll have Part Two of the Gyroball article up soon along with some pitching mechanics analysis pieces on some other young pitchers in the big leagues. Draftee Report: Brian Matusz (Orioles, 4th overall)
Driveline Mechanics — Brian Matusz was the fourth overall selection in the MLB Amateur Draft this year. He is an LHP out of the University of San Diego with the following arsenal: Fastball: 88-91 mph (max 93-94) with good sink. Slider: 80-81 mph - more like a cutter than a slider - uses it to back hitters off the plate. Curve: 76-80 mph - his go-to out pitch; he throws it for strikes and generates plenty of swinging strikes with it. Changeup: 81-83 mph - another go-to out pitch vs. platoon advantaged hitters; features good ...

Trade Analysis: C.C. Sabathia for Matt LaPorta (and others)
Driveline Mechanics — Reports: Indians trade C.C. Sabathia to Brewers Matt LaPorta, the centerpiece of the Indians’ return The Cleveland Indians, essentially out of the playoff hunt, have decided to become sellers at the deadline, agreeing in principle to send the defending AL Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers for a package that is rumored to include 1b/LF Matt LaPorta, LHP Zach Jackson, RHP Rob Bryson, and a PTBNL who is rumored to be IF Taylor Green. The Brewers will be getting a rental player in Sabathia for the playoff push, giving them a one-two punch at the top of the ...

Jamie Burke’s Pitching Mechanics
Driveline Mechanics — Some of you may have noticed that Jamie Burke, the third-string catcher, was brought in to relieve during last night’s Seattle/Detroit game. He gave up a double, then threw a wild pitch, then gave up a sac fly to lose the game. However, the process was the best part: Those aren’t the greatest mechanics in the world, no sir. It is, however, funny to watch position players pitch. This is a post from: Driveline Mechanics - An Unconventional Look at Baseball Scouting. Jamie Burke’s Pitching ...

Your Input: Rich Harden Trade
Driveline Mechanics — Rich Harden traded in six-player deal with the Cubs I’ll make a post on this trade tomorrow with my thoughts, but what do you think about the trade? Did the A’s not get enough? Did the Cubs trade away too much for an injury-prone starter? This is a post from: Driveline Mechanics - An Unconventional Look at Baseball Scouting. Your Input: Rich Harden Trade

Writer Departure - Now Hiring!
Driveline Mechanics — Driveline Mechanics writer Chad Gonczy is taking a leave of absence due to his work and med school hours eating up all of his free time. Though he was only here for a short period of time, he is a friend of mine and I miss his insights on player evaluation from a sabermetric standpoint. I wish him well, and I hope all of our readers do the same - he’s off saving lives, after all! That means that Driveline Mechanics is looking for one (or possibly two) writers to cover the following subjects: Current and possible future trades - how they impact MLB and fantasy teams Player ...

News: Hiring Process
Driveline Mechanics — Hey everyone! The response to our post looking for writers and interns has been amazing - the emails are still pouring in, and I haven’t had the chance to respond to all of them. Rest assured, however, that I am poring over all the responses and picking out the best people that can contribute to Driveline Mechanics, and hopefully we’ll have two or even three new writers by next week. Not to tip my hand too much, but I’m planning on adding writers for the following subjects: In-depth weekly Pitch f/x analysis Weekly transaction reports around the league Standard ...

Trade Analysis: Rich Harden (analysis of Sean Gallagher, too!)
Driveline Mechanics — Sean Gallagher - The Biggest Return Piece in the Rich Harden Deal When I solicited your views for the Rich Harden trade, the responses were varied amongst both Cubs and A’s fans. Make no bones about it - the A’s dealt a high-risk but high-impact player in Rich Harden and received a group of mediocre to above-average talent blocked at most positions in the Cubs’ system. However, is this such a bad thing? Remember that Harden hasn’t ...

Welcome New Hires!
Driveline Mechanics — I am proud to announce that I’ve added three new writers to Driveline Mechanics! Here they are, along with their primary duties: Josh Kalk - Pitch f/x Analyst Nick Mueller - Performance Analyst David Golebiewski - Transactions Analyst You may know some of these authors - Josh writes for The Hardball Times and David writes for Most Valuable Network, both doing similar work as they will be doing here. They will be making individual posts in the coming days to introduce themselves and what their backgrounds are. Thanks to everyone who applied, as I ...

A little about myself…
Driveline Mechanics — Hi, my name is David Golebiewski. Kyle was gracious enough to let me contribute to this great site, and I’d like to introduce myself to you fine readers out there. For the past two years, I have contributed to Most Valuable Network, first for the Pittsburgh Lumber Company (a Pirates-centric blog) and most recently for The Transaction Guy, a blog that breaks down and analyzes the most prominent transactions from around the league. In addition to feeding my baseball addiction, I am currently enrolled at Duquesne University as a Journalism major. For Driveline Mechanics, I will be contributing ...

News: We’re Moving!
Driveline Mechanics — Well, sort of. Driveline Mechanics will soon be a partner in the SB Nation Network, host of team blogs such as Athletics Nation and DRays Bay in addition to some great independent baseball blogs like Minor League Ball and Beyond the Box Score. What does this mean for you? Well, for starters, to comment you’ll now need to register an account at SB Nation - but don’t worry, it’s really easy. Driveline Mechanics will also see an increase in traffic through the other partners in the SB Nation network, and the backend of the software should be easier to maintain and ...

Has Mike Pelfrey turned the corner? A Pitch F/X analysis
Driveline Mechanics — The New York Mets had grandiose visions for Mike Pelfrey when the organization selected him 9th overall in the 2005 Amateur Draft. A lanky, 6-7 righthander from Wichita State, Pelfrey was pegged as a major league-ready talent who only lasted until the 9th pick because of Scott Boras-induced bonus demands. Equipped with a “projectable” pitcher’s frame as well as a plus fastball with sink and run, the former Shocker was expected to develop into an ace in short order. Problem was, the scouting report on Pelfrey entering the 2008 campaign read entirely like the pre-draft 2005 report: an enticing sinker, ...

HR Derby: Josh Hamilton
Driveline Mechanics — I have to run out to a baseball game myself, but I thought this clip worth posting - Josh Hamilton taking one (of many) baseballs out of the yard at Yankee Stadium during the HR Derby: You can learn a lot just by looking. This is a post from: Driveline Mechanics - An Unconventional Look at Baseball Scouting. HR Derby: Josh Hamilton

A little about myself…#2
Driveline Mechanics — I’m Nick Mueller and I too am one of the new writers here at Driveline Mechanics thanks to Kyle and I’ll be focusing on the performance/mechanics of mostly prospects or the “hot” rookies.  For a little about me: I guess to put it bluntly, my official qualifications/experience are nill.  I’m a baseball nut who has spent borderline unhealthy amounts of time watching baseball and reading anything and everything I can get.  So much so it has extended into my “real” life as I’m minoring in statistics solely to understand the methods behind the more advanced metrics. ...

News: Period of Absence
Driveline Mechanics — Well, everyone, I am writing from my home computer for the last time in this apartment, as nearly everything else (except clothes) are packed for my move cross-town from Lake City to Ballard. My birthday is today (I’m 25), my bachelor party spans this weekend, and then I’m getting married on Thursday. Internet won’t be set up in my house until next Friday, during which time I will be in San Diego for my honeymoon, watching the Padres and Diamondbacks in addition to touring the San Diego Zoo and relaxing on the beach. So, in other words, don’t expect any substantive updates from me in the near ...

Monday Applesauce
Amazin' Avenue — Apparently, Eddie Kunz has not impressed the Mets. In 2.1 innings. A huge sample size. He has failed. Consider the Mets unimpressed. And now he will be ushered back to the minors once someone -- likely John Maine on Wednesday -- has to come off the disabled list. I won't argue that Kunz has been good, but what the hell is 2.1 innings to judge impressiveness? That he had the gaul to give up his first homerun in three years on *their* watch, I'm guessing. At MetsGeek, Chris McCown has his own solution to the Mets' bullpen woes. He theorizes that the Mets have too many specialists -- Joe Smith ...

Trio o' tidbits
McCovey Chronicles — ... Also on the mechanics tip, SB Nation has just added Driveline Mechanics to the roster, which is a nice coup. The statistical side of baseball has always had plenty of representation on the internet, so it’s awesome to see that the next wave is focused on the biomechanics of baseball, which is almost the final frontier for baseball nerds. Sure, you can prattle on about VORP and Win Shares to the guy sitting next you, but I promise he’s ignoring you. Really, he is. But once you start talking about reverse rotations and rushed arm action, that’s when you’ll ...

Friday Rockpile:
Purple Row — ... I alluded to the SBN launch of Driveline Mechanics last week when discussing Max Scherzer, but apparently we can make it official now. While it's a fantastic blog, let's hope that we never see Rockies pitchers discussed over there, as it seems to be more often than not a bad thing if they're bringing somebody up. Let's Go Tribe! — ... slider. Both pitches are considered out pitches in the majors. The problem for Perez is staying in the strike zone, something that separates the Joe Nathans of the world from the Jason Davises and Fernando Cabreras. The Indians' coaching staff has some work ahead of them to turn Perez from a pitcher with a lot of potential to a late-inning stalwart. Given the recent track of relievers in this organization, I'm pretty skeptical that he'll make that transition in Cleveland. SBN's Driveline Mechanics notes some problems with his mechanics: A ...
