... Gaslamp Ball seem to be suffering from an overdose of festive spirit, and haven't mentioned the reports yet. So we turn to Ducksnorts, who point out the Padres already traded an aging leftie (Wells) away: "If they insist on sticking an ancient left-hander at the back of the rotation, why not work something out with the guy they already gave up something to get?" That's a good point, and Geoff, like me, would be happy to see a rival get screwed in the trade. Similarly,

... isn't susceptible to lefthanders (.293/.388/.683 so far in 2007), and he is the rare Padres batter that doesn't seem to mind Petco Park (.299/.354/.479 hitting there since joining the Padres vs .302/.366/.538 away). Sounds like a recipe for success to me. Gonzalez' career could move in many different directions, and I hesitate to guess which path he'll take. He's made the Mientkiewicz comparisons look silly, and perhaps Palmeiro isn't as much of a stretch as we might have thought. The question no longer is whether Gonzalez can hit 20+ homers a year at the big-league level; it's whether he can crank out 30-35 of them. We'll have to wait and see, of course, but if the past year of his life is any indication, the answer would appear to be yes. So, how good is Gonzalez? At the risk of getting overly technical, he's pretty darned good. References and Resources Data courtesy of Baseball-Reference and David Pinto's Day-by-Day Database. Now most organizations would ve sent Felix to the minors for at the least one rehab start. For most teams thats S.O.P., so why treat a game against the Division leader as a rehab start for Felix? I understand it was a boost to the club as a whole and they went on to win the game on a torrid offensive burst and 4+ wonderful innings from Sean White who notched his first victory of the season. Yes, The King was on a pitch count and only went 3.1 innings and you could tell he had a bit out mound rust. That s why I think it would ve been better to send him to Tacoma or even High Desert to get one start under his belt so he could shake off that rust. I just think it was poor planning among other things with the M s. Though it is good to see him back on the mound and can t wait until his next start against the Padres (

He also was one of the few guys in the lineup hitting (.272/.337/.517) before the All-Star break. Reynolds put up some eye-popping numbers (.337/.422/.670) at Lancaster in the California League last year, but that is one of the most hitter-friendly environments in professional baseball, and it's hard to properly evaluate batters who play half their games there. The fact that he continued to produce on being promoted to Double-A was a definite point in his favor. Yes, he struggled in June (.162/.222/.297) after a ridiculous May (.426/.484/.815), but Reynolds has bounced back somewhat since then and looks ready to contribute now and into the future. ... hit 50 homers for the Padres in 1998. He, Ashby, Caminiti, Finley and Hoffman were guys around whom the 1996 and 1998 playoff teams were built. Smith was directly responsible for acquiring those last four and he at least laid the groundwork for Vaughn's arrival. Smith departed as Padres GM in November 1995 and was replaced by Kevin Towers, who put the finishing touches on a contending club largely built by his predecessor. Towers has enjoyed considerable success in San Diego, while Smith became GM of the Detroit Tigers with disastrous results. There is no denying the damage Smith did to that franchise; at the same time, it's difficult to overstate his positive contributions to the Padres even as his bosses were busy stripping the organization of identifiable talent. For that, San Diego fans should be grateful. References and Resources As usual, Baseball-Reference.com and Bill James' Win Shares were invaluable in preparing data. Why the Rockies will beat the Phillies

... kies to be here, and that makes them dangerous. They've demonstrated over the past few weeks that they can play with anyone. Unlike some other teams, who have had lofty expectations placed on them from the beginning, the Rockies have nothing to lose. I don't know that this in itself makes them a better ballclub, but it places added pressure on the Phillies, who, like the Mets, will have to answer uncomfortable questions if this as far as their 2007 season goes. In a nutshell, the Rockies will win this series because theirs is one of the few offenses in the NL that can keep up with Philadelphia's. For as good as Hamels is, I just don't see anyone else on the Phillies containing the Rockies bats with regularity. And although Colorado doesn't have a starter in Hamels' class, it's pitching staff is much deeper, which gives the Rockies the upper hand. Both teams play a similar brand of baseball, Colorado just does it a little better. Geoff Young blogs about the San Diego Padres at ...

I thought they would split in Philadelphia (with Hamels winning the opener), and Colorado would then dominate at home. The fact that the Rockies were able to slice through a very good Phillies team with such ease should make Arizona uncomfortable heading into the NLCS. Why the Rockies will beat the Diamondbacks

... : 144 Both teams feature great closers. Arizona has stronger support guys, while Colorado's 'pen is a little deeper. No appreciable advantage here. When the Rockies faced Philadelphia in the NLDS, it was like looking into a mirror. Both teams featured similar strengths, and Colorado advanced because of superior pitching. In this series, we've got two very different teams. For the Diamondbacks to win, they need a lot to go right -- they need guys like Drew and Ojeda to stay hot, and everyone not named Webb to work deep into games. For Colorado, the equation is much simpler. If they just keep doing what they've been doing all year, and in particular over the past month or so, they'll take the series. They may need six or even seven games to do it, but in the end, their offense will overcome Arizona's pitching, which won't be quite strong enough to compensate for its weak offense. ... ing bullpen the Red Sox have. Colorado's is terrific, but there isn't much of a comparison here, unless you're looking at the back-end guys. None of the Boston relievers give up many homers. If the Rockies are going to do damage, it's not going to be against these guys. Conclusion For the Rockies to win this series, they need to split in Boston. They need Torrealba and Matsui to stay hotter than anyone has a right to expect. They need the young rotation to step up and stare down their more seasoned counterparts. The Rockies need a lot of things to go right to make this happen. What they've got going in their favor is the fact that over the past five or so weeks, virtually everything has gone right. Regardless of "true level of talent" or any other theoretical constructs we can devise, Colorado's belief in itself just might be enough to carry the Rockies past one final postseason opponent and bring a world championship to Denver. As I said at the top, I don't have a definitive answer, but here are a few possibilities: My best guess is that there are a combination of factors at work here some I have suggested, others I may not have considered (hidden injuries, off-field issues, Mercury retrograde, etc.). Any one of them probably wouldn't be enough to push Barfield in the wrong direction, but together, they just might. So, where does Barfield go from here? At his age, he would seem a good bet to bounce back and enjoy a solid big-league career. Febles, though, gives us at least one data point suggesting that less favorable outcomes are possible. The wholly unsatisfying answer is that we don't know and we won't until it happens. If we did, presumably we'd find better ways to spend our time than talking about such things. In many cases our judgments may be correct, but that's a separate issue that doesn't help us discover teams' motivations for investing heavily in generic middle relievers: risk aversion, slowness to adapt, etc. Others can explain why doing what everyone else does isn't the optimal strategy; for now we'll just be content to note that this is what is happening. Young has been working on this aspect of his game in spring training, but it’s hard to say how much that will pay off during the season. Base stealers who play in the NL West could have a slight advantage over their counterparts who don’t get to face the Padres as often. It might not be enough to make a difference, but you may want to keep this in the back of your mind.
