Published 5/15/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
Filed under: Patriots, NFL Media Watch, BostonA day after the Boston Herald apologized for its February 2 article saying the New England Patriots taped the St. Louis Rams' final practice before the 2002 Super Bowl, the paper's editor is both reiterating the apology and standing by the reporter who wrote the story. In an editor's note in today's paper, Kevin R. Convey says he won't throw reporter John Tomase under the bus:
Nevertheless, I continue to stand behind the work of the Herald sports department and John Tomase, a talented journalist who has dealt with this difficult matter professionally while continuing to do his ...

Patriots lawsuit appears unlikely

Posted by ESPN.com's Mike Sando The Patriots are no longer considering a lawsuit against the Boston Herald now that the newspaper has apologized for its erroneous Spygate story, the Boston Globe notes. Herald editor Kevin R. Convey took responsibility for the mistake, while reporter John Tomase plans to elaborate on what went wrong Friday. The thought of attorneys calling as witnesses Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Ernie Adams and others in the Patriots organization might appeal from a selling-papers ...
HERALD EDITOR TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR SPYGATE SCREW-UP
Published 5/15/2008 by Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com
One of the biggest questions in the wake of the decision of the Boston Herald to retract (without using the “R” word) its February 2 article accusing the Patriots of videotaping the Rams’ walk-through practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI is when (and if) heads will roll. Apparently, the guy whose name appeared on the story won’t be fired, or removed from his beat. In Thursday’s Herald , editor-in-chief Kevin R. Convey said that he “ continue[s] to stand behind the work of the Herald sports department and John Tomase ...
Herald rolls out another apology

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley I think anyone who believes that the Boston Herald didn't realize it had made a serious mistake until after the Matt Walsh-Roger Goodell meeting Tuesday is being pretty naive. The newspaper may have taken the "unprecedented" step to apologize to the Patriots on the front page Wednesday, but I thought it came across as somewhat flippant -- and late. As a tabloid, it's difficult for the Herald to suddenly start acting like a bastion of journalistic integrity. Blaring the headline "Sorry, Pats!" across the front page doesn't really reflect a sincere apology. And neither did a retraction in which ...
Asshole Of The Week: The Boston Herald
Published 5/16/2008 by Fornelli (noreply@blogger.com) at Foul Balls
[image] Welcome to Asshole Of The Week , where every Friday your trusty Foul Balls editor picks out the one person from the previous seven days who makes him think, "Man, what an asshole." It could be anybody from an athlete, an owner, someone in the media, or just anybody who happens to catch my ire. Another first in the short history of Asshole Of The Week here on Foul Balls: instead of naming a person as the Asshole Of The Week, I'm naming an entire newspaper. Or at least their sports department. Though, if this week's honor were to be bestowed upon one individual, that individual would be John Tomase. Who the hell is John Tomase, and why should you care? Well, Christ, give ...
