... As for tonight's game, I wish there were more to talk about but the Mets did literally nothing of any consequence. Elmer Dessens tossed two perfect innings of relief, so there's that. By request, I've added a link to a traditional game recap in the "SB Nation Coverage" section below, so if you want a blow-by-blow account of the game instead of whatever it is I do here, you can check that out by clicking below. ...

... -- Nieve was lit up for another eleven hits, this time in just 3.1 innings. He only allowed three runs, though, so some imbecile might have you believe that he "gutted" his way through the jams, or that he "dug deep", "bore down" or "pitched to his defense". In reality, he "was just plain awful", he "sucked big time" and "embarrassed himself and his whole family". He had the good fortune of pitching in front of Daniel Murphy's glove and had the good sense to be relieved by Elmer Dessens, who was likewise grateful for Ryan Church's arm and ...

Reviewing Dayton Moore at the Trade Deadline: 2006
Royals Review —
... 2008 Cortes was highly regarded as a pitching prospect. Considering that both Cortes and Lumsden are both gone now, having never contributed at the Major League level (Lumsden stayed in the KC system until last November, when he was claimed by the Astros) it remains mostly a good trade in only in an alternative universe. Of course, according to the party line, Cortes was used to acquire a great everyday shortstop with lots of upside. So another victory.

It was a little weird to see Pedro Martinez in a Phillies' uniform, but I got over it pretty quickly. He was about what I expected: five strikeouts, one walk, four runs in six innings.
Luis Castillo went 3-for-4 with a walk and has an OBP of .411.
Brian Schneider went 0-for-4 and has an OBP of .268.
Elmer Dessens has been far from awful. There, I said it.

Amazin' Avenue —
... Signed Elmer Dessens to a minor league contract. Dessens should never have seen the light of day, but with injuries and ineptitude swallowing the Mets' 2009 season, Dessens managed to appear in 28 games in relief, showing decent control and a proclivity for groundballs (yet he still allowed five homeruns in 32.2 innings). He wasn't the worst pitcher the Mets had, and was probably quite a bit better than expected, but more playing time should expose him as a below-average reliever. ...

... are close to re-signing 38 year-old right-handed pitcher Elmer Dessens. Next logical question: why? Dessens posted a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 32.2 extremely low-leverage innings in 2009. Fortunately, we know not to look at ERA and WHIP as useful statistics for pitcher evaluation. The numbers that matter (3.86 K/9, 5.33 FIP, 4.93 tERA) tell a much different story, a story of luck fueled by an unsustainable .196 BABIP. Given his underwhelming stuff and 89 mph fastball, there's really no reason to bring him back for a major ...
