Where to, Pau Gasol?
Published 2/1/2008 at ESPN.com - True Hoop - Blog
Pau Gasol is something of a mystery. He's a former All-Star and a World Champion. He's the engine of one of the best national teams in recent memory. He is beloved by many of his teammates, and revered by his countrymen. Even in Memphis he's a proven scorer in the post, off the dribble, jump shooting, and finishing every which way around the hoop. Remember when he younger and was an easy pick for rookie of the year? He has been a winner. And he's only 27 now, an age when most big men are reaching their peak. Despite battling various injuries, Gasol has always put up good numbers. At the moment he's in the ...
NBA Picks and Rolls: The Pau Gasol Heist

Pau Gasol Photo Credit: Icon SMI The Kevin Garnett trade of last summer garnered more headlines, and KG is certainly a better player than Pau Gasol, but Mitch Kupchak’s acquisition of the 7′ tall, 27-year-old Spaniard may have a bigger impact on this NBA season. Los Angeles now has as good a shot at an NBA title as any team in the league. Just over a week after they were in first place in the West, the Lakers were suddenly looking like a team in danger of slipping out of the playoff picture in the ultra-competitive Western Conference. Not only will Gasol keep them in the heart of the playoff race, but when Andrew Bynum returns Los Angeles could ...

So we now know why the Bulls did not make a deal for Pau Gasol. Michael Heisley is the owner of the Grizzlies, and he really doesn’t sound too happy with the Bulls. I’m not thrilled either.
Q. When did you realize that a financial deal had to be made?
A. I realized it when we tried to negotiate with Chicago. They weren’t interested in giving us financial relief. We had other conversations with teams and the people they were giving us back were veterans with substantial money left on their contracts. They were not of the same quality that Pau was.
We didn’t feel like ...

A New Home For Big Ben
Published 2/16/2008 at Chicago Sports Review
Best. Trade Deadline. Ever. As bad as the 2007 NBA Trade Deadline was, the 2008 version has been historic. One future Hall of Famer, Shaq, has already been traded and another, Jason Kidd, is on the verge of switching teams. Past All-Stars Shawn Marion and Pau Gasol have new homes, as does former number one pick Kwame Brown. Two former stars, Chris Webber and Damon Stoudamire, were each signed by playoff-bound teams and I haven't even mentioned the epic Stromille Swift-for-Jason Collins trade yet (and I won't mention it again). There is a very real chance that by the time the deadline passes next week every major title contender will have ...

This answer may surprise you: They're going to crush Ben's head with a high-five. Crazy, huh?) Andrea Bargnani: Mr. Former Number One Overall Draft Pick had a rather painful night off the bench: Zero points (0-for-2), 2 rebounds, and 1 foul in seven minutes. How Paxson and D'Antoni can make this work
Published 5/6/2008 by Rickhouse at Tremendous Upside Potential
So it looks like Mike D’Antoni is going to be next coach of the Bulls, huh? Sweet. But now comes the biggest hurdle: Paxson has to turn this roster into something D’Antoni can use. Like we said on Friday, this team is built more for Avery Johnson than D’Antoni. Paxson has focused on bringing in defensive-minded players since he got here. That all has to change now. Outside of Tyrus Thomas, who I think can do a dead-on Shawn Marion impersonation, and maybe Noah and Thabo, Pax has a lot of work to do if D’Antoni is going to be successful. While Phoenix’s offense was awesome, it never seemed all that complicated: Nash and Amare ...

“Free” Agents
Published 25 days ago by Kurt at Forum Blue And Gold
The term free agent applies to the players and their status, but for the Lakers any signings will be anything but free. Which is why we can expect limited if any action from the Lakers on the open market that starts tonight.
Let’s start with this — the Lakers payroll right now is about $75 million with 10 players signed. Next year’s salary cap will be about $58.5 million, meaning the Lakers can only resign their own players or offer the mid-level exception (about $5.6 million this year) to other team’s players. Those signings are allowed over the cap, which is a “soft” number.
However, the luxury tax is a “hard” number and next season ...

Taking Another Look at the Orlando Magic's Salaries and What the Team Can Do in Free Agency

You may remember this post from May, in which I tried to navigate the NBA's salary cap to see what the Magic could do this summer in free agency. Now that we're closer to the beginning of the free-agent signing period (Wednesday, July 9th), I thought I'd take another look at it. I've presented my findings in a Q-and-A format. For this post, I consulted Larry Coon's NBA Salary Cap F.A.Q., Storyteller's Contracts, ESPN's 2008 NBA Free Agent list, and the Orlando Magic's official roster page. We hope you find this guide helpful.
Question: How many players do the Magic have under contract next ...

The Hornets are one of the best up-and-coming teams in the NBA and hope Posey will provide some of the intangibles that he provided with the Celtics and Heat when he helped both teams win NBA Titles. This does weaken the Celtics a bit, depending on who they sign to replace him. With Posey Gone, Who’s Left For The Cavs?
Published 7 days ago by Smooth at Cavalier Attitude
With Posey Gone, Who’s Left For The Cavs? If there’s one move that you could applaud Danny Ferry for not making, it would be not overpaying for James Posey. Ferry and the Cavaliers did the right thing by letting Posey go to the New Orleans Hornets. Sure they could have upped their offer from three years (full MLE) to four years, but that would have been silly. Giving 4 years to a role player, who will be 32 this season and has relegated to strictly shooting 3-pointers? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved Posey in wine and gold for next season but not for that many years. It would have been another case of paying for aging ...

Seems the crack that those free agents might fall through got a little smaller yesterday when Eddie House and Tony Allen both went back to Boston. A bit surprising, given the reports and rumours that were other there, but it does give the Cs a big chunk of their bench back.
So, who’s left? Hmm, not a lot, actually.
